TCPA: "Trusted" Computing Platform Alliance. Also known as Palladium, DRM, or "Fritz Chip" for Fritz Hollings.
Basically it's a way for the giant megakorporations to forcibly strip you of your right to use your own damn computer however you damn well please. This technology from Hell will become required in all computers under penalty of a giant fine ($500,000) or a long jail term (5 years) by a similarly diabolical bill called the CBDTPA, formerly the SSSCA bill.
In a nutshell, taken from the Against TCPA website.
# The informational self-determination isn't existing anymore, it's not possible to save, copy, create, program, ..., the data like you want. This applies for privates as for companies
# The free access to the IT/Software market is completely prevented for anyone except the big companies, the market as we know it today will get completely destroyed
# Restrictions in the usage of owned hardware would apply
# The liberty of opinion and the free speech on the internet would finally be eliminated
# The own rights while using IT-technologies are history.
# The national self-determination of the der particular countries would be fully in the hands of the USA
# Probably the world would break into two digital parts (Countries that express against TCPA)
As you can see, this shit is comparable to the Death Star from the viewpoint of the Rebels. Anyone who uses freeware, in fact,
ANYONE who has any contact with computers at all will be detrimentally affected. The bill cannot pass. If it does, it is The End....

Note to self....buy as many thunderbirds and fans as possible before they become illegal. If they can find my ass, they can arrest it. I AM NOT changing.

TCPA is not Palladium.
IBM has a FAQ on TCPA, though whether or not it can be trusted remains to be seen. They have made an open source linux driver for it though.

Okay, so TCPA isn't Palladium, but Pd is an integral part in M$'s role in the TCPA. As for that Linux driver... Anyone honestly think that they'll use it if the CBDTPA (formerly SSSCA) fails?
Speaking of, someone asked about how small companies or individuals can get their appz to be "trusted." My response:
(WARNING! INCOMING RANT!)
<MAJOR RANT>
They can't. It's blatant anticompetitive monopolism at its worst. Not only do the megakorporations want 100% marketshare, but they're reveling in the fact that they can completely stomp Joe Netizen's rights into oblivion. Who cares if the economy goes to H E double hockey sticks and the nation's prisons get filled to dangerously overcrowded with nonviolent "offenders" so fast it'll suck the government dry of funds as it tries to house thirty million prisoners??! All the corporate pigs care about is getting ALL our money NOW and putting it in a vault somewhere to rot. In other words, they want us dead (or jailed for life) and they want our money. Just like the common criminal on the streets. Just like the tinpot dictators of Iraq and North Korea. JUST LIKE MICRO$OFT!
</MAJOR RANT>
In other words, the megakorporations won't let 'em. I think it's time to kill some monopolist thugs IMNSHO...

It's only just time?....been that way for years, they were just waiting for a chance to release this. 9/11 (as much as I hate to say it) has probably been their whole reason for trying to push this among other things

This is a great reason to live in Australia...
Those "laws" won't apply here.

That's exactly what some people said about the DMCA. They thought "This is an idiotic, draconian piece of legislation which makes it illegal to DISCUSS certain things in public! No one would EVER pass this bullshit!" And guess what? It passed. Welcome to the United Police States of America.
Fight this bullshit, American voters. Do not sit back and assume it will take care of itself.

Working on the assumption that people will think they can make a difference...Most have given up on such notions as 'It only takes one to stand up and refuse' to start the tidal wave...years of Megacorporation mental beat downs have is starting to ensure her people are becoming mindless slaves to one or two men who think they are powerful.
they need to relearn what Freedom is or they will lose it...sooner than they think

It's also what the people who wrote the 16th amendment said about a cap on the sales tax. They assumed that no sane government would tax above 1%(yes, 1%) and so didn't make any provisions. Now we have somewhere around 20-33%.

It's mostly lost already. Representative government is an experiment that almost always eventually fails. On one hand, you have the people a government is supposed to represent. They're usually too busy with their day-to-day lives to express much more than disinterested apathy in the affairs of government. On the other hand, you have people who end up coming to power. Now human beings tend to be a rather selfish bunch. Which means those in power tend to want more of it. So eventually, all governments eventually tend towards authoritarian models.
But I'm just ranting. I plan to buy big guns myself.

If brute force don't solve the problem, then your obviously not using enough of it..
To quote one of the delightful little pieces floating about here, it sums up just about right really.
