WTC -- 1970's icon destroyed. Nothing bigger, bolder, taller planned due to lawyers and fear.
Columbia -- 1970's technology destroyed , Nothing bigger, bolder, taller planned due to lawyers and fear.
Concorde - 1970's technology destroyed , Nothing bigger, bolder, taller planned due to lawyers and fear.
Truly, these are wimpy, sad times. We are witnessing the Soccer-momification of America. "Safety first, no running, no playing and don't get hurt!!!

Anyone else think that they hit the nail on the head with this?

It is simple economic reality that makes the shuttle, supersonic passenger planes and ultra high buildings unattractive.
Its not because people are afraid. It because there smart enough to know that all three are giant money sinks and better returns can be gotten via other methods.

The 60's and 70's where an economic boom time and projects got built that would be laughed off today.
WTC, cost. Several smaller building will give a bigger return and will start going it in a fraction of the time.
Columbia, cost and purpose. Reusable craft such as it are a waste. Too much fuel for too little payload. A Soyuz like craft is far more efficient.
Concorde, cost and the fact that the thing has never turned a profit. So why spend money to go even faster? Theres no point.
What this is saying that, instead of pressing on and getting something bigger and better, we are going smaller, and less bold. Take the WTC, we will have no bigger towers (which, you must admit, would be a great slap in the face to the bastards that did that).
They are just illustrating the wussification of America.

Its wussification that companies and developers make sane financial choices and don't intentionally drive them selves into bankruptcy? Would you call someone a wuss if they wouldn't jump off a bridge into two feet of water, just because three decades ago there was ten feet?
Economic conditions have changed since the 1970's. The fact that the people in charge can accept reality is actually a very good sign, often they cant.

Maybe we can have a healthy mix?
We could be abusive and not get hurt.
Seriously, I hate this safety shit that's going round, someof the great old playgrounds are disappearing because everything's too dangerous, people tend to learn from mistakes more than they do from warnings. I know not to use monkey bars now, my mum warned me for ages not to use them, so of course, first chance, I went there. 2nd rung, I fell off and banged my head, I never went on those again.
I won't even start on other things that are fucked due to safety. (See George Carlin's HBO Special)

It's the USSR's fault.
See, if they hadn't fallen, then big bucks would be going towards Cold War research...such as hypersonic planes, space programs, and suchlike.
Blame the lack of Commies....

So what? We should invent some more Commies?

Nah, we should go back to giving scientists huge wads of cash to do research...I don't think the threat of nukes helped any.
