Who is the best (active) footballer?

Post by Modax »

Or to put it another way, if you were owner and manager of a football club, who would be your first choice to put on it?

Serious answers only, please.

Why is Klose up there, rather than say - Lahm, Podolski or Ballack? If World Cup experience isn't a necessity to qualify for the poll - why not Muller, Oezil, or Schweinsteiger?

Anyway, I voted Messi because he's the only player up there whose progress I actually followed from the 2006 World Cup.

Other - Phillip Lahm. The little guy is simply the best current German player.

Messi and C. Ronaldo play football on another level to everyone else on that list (and I hated typing the second name). Messi.

One word: Istanbul.

How anyone can draw up a list like that and not mention Steven Gerrard is beyond me.

Stevie has had a face like a smacked arse all season ... but aside for that, while I think Steven's technical ability is vastly underrated it's just not to the level of Messi.

It's not just his technical ability - it's the way that, at his best, he can win matches single-handed through sheer force of personality. As I said: Istanbul. We were well and truly beaten in that match, but someone forgot to tell Stevie G, and it was his leadership more than any other single factor that brought us back.

Not to take anything away from the lad, but I'm pretty sure Rafa changing the team shape and bringing Didi on to contain Kaka had something to do with it..

True. I must admit my memory of that is being somewhat pissed off that we'd lost by half time, Stevie pulled one back, and all of a sudden it was 3-3. :D

Wayne Rooney for me, and as a Chelsea supporter thats painful to admit. Rooney's misfortune in this world cup is that he is surrounded by idiots terrified to making another look good at their own expense.

Rooney made Christiano Ronaldo when he was with Manure by dropping off and supplying, which is why Ronaldo looked so shit playing for Madrid last season. Rooney is a team player happy just to assist when needed, more than able to finish with the best and when he's fully fit he can command a game like no other, his only down fall is his temper.

The system didn't help. It's the old story of playing 4-4-2 and playing Gerrard and Lampard in the same team.

Well while Liverpool fans like yourself are dining on the ashes of Istanbul we are winning league and cup doubles and planning for the future. Good luck with the Phonejacker as your manager.

Maureen was given £500 million and built ... a £500 million Wimbledon team. You have zero youth development, your entire success is being bankrolled and you buy all your talent. Having said that, better you than ManU, except in Europe, hope you never, ever, ever win big ears.

Liverpool 5; London teams 0

Oh this is hilarious. The team that unequivocally showed themselves to be world champion material have no votes

Can I retract my vote? Today Iniesta and company... holy shit

The reason is though; Messi plays with half the Spanish team, and he is outstanding there! Witness;

Messi vs Arsenal

P.S. Sorry to inflict upon you Andy Gray's shit house commentary, but on the plus side he almost sounded like he was going to commit suicide!

Wiki says he has Spanish citizenship as well. Imagine what Spain would be like if he chose to play with them!

Because he's not as good as you think he is? Football fans in general are utterly blinkered, but Liverpool fans always seem to be more than most.

You must surely be aware that fans of every other club view Istanbul as the match Milan threw away rather than the Steven Gerrard assent to sainthood you all seem to think. Milan had won the match, forgot there were 45 minutes to play and you got lucky.

Gerrard is clearly talented and, in the correct team, extremely effective. As an all round footballer, however, he is seriously lacking. He gives the ball away far too much (and often in the worst possible situations), has limited control of the ball (just watch how he needs two touches to get it under control more often than not) and is shit at tackling. He is also a glory boy. Look how ineffective he was last season without Alonso.

He is still one of the best English footballers, of course, but that's like being one of the tallest dwarves.
