long day (protests)
damn. my legs are sore - spent all day standing up and placing posters.
Ive been seeing a lot of pro peace signs going up over the last few days, and I heard they were having a major rally today. so I printed off 20 comments on why the war might be a good idea, and after a few hrs yesterday of getting permission, I was able to post them.
It was rather odd at 8:30 this morning, I will say. the main hall was possessed by the retro hippies, who were playing music and putting up huge, huge posters on why peace is a good thing. I agree with a lot of what they say - the rest I regard as shortsighted.
so for the first 90 mins of the day, I walk through silent halls, well away from the main protest, putting up posters next to theirs. these are the first posters supporting the war at my school, and I couldnt find my buddy who said he would help. as well, there were some 20 protesters, and I started feeling a little isolted.
as the second block ended tho, I started getting comments. people laughing at my dry comments on the posters, people asking if I was pro and shaking my hand when I said yes. my ego was restored.
so I see my friend, he shows me his poster, and we print off some copies, place them everywhere. then, as we are by the band room, we are struck by inspiration.
in the main hall, the retrohippies are still playing lulling music, talking peace, saying war is bad. and then, ten times louder then their music, a drum beat of thunderous proportions, like out of lord of the rings. .. drums out of the deep.
and around a corner comes a guy who looks like jesus with a feather in a hat, a huge drum in front of him with the bold label WAR DRUM. behind him, four people in black with long hair, wearing 10-15 pro war logos - with some people filing behind in curiousity.
we did it twice ^_^ stopped all convo in the mainhall. bwhah.
after that, my friend had to go to class, so I found someone else, and we put up a bunch more posters. then there was a debate, which I caught the tail end of - I have a feeling a bunch of facts on both sides were made up or gossip. then lunch, another debate. I spent both in the audience, persuading my neighbor that war was a good thing. after the debate, I took 45 min to chat with a fem who supported peace. good convo.
after that, I just walked the halls - iraq was the main topic. good points on all sides, much more interesting then the media. I also found spoofs of my posters. very amusing.
so, how did the protests do in your area? Im told they were pretty wide spread.

Well, my school is on break, so the longhairs had to content themselves with sending self-congratulatory e-mails celebrating how englightened they are. And the town I'm in is all blue collar and some low-end white collar types who support the war. No protesting here.

Sounds like you've had an interesting day. No protests here that I've seen. Lots of peace bumper stickers though. Did see a crowd waving US flags and holding signs saying, "SUPPORT OUR TROOPS." Have a feeling that if peace protesters tried to clog the entrance to post, we'd have a difficult time keeping our joes from getting out of their vehicles and beating them, since traffic on and off post is generally pretty rough anyway...

I know that I've had a lot of fun at college screwing with people's heads. I had my hair long last semester, and people thought that I was one of the left-wingers. Imagine their shock when I begin arguing for war...

They had some little two bit peace rally with maybe 200 people on it (off of a campus of 26000, go figure). I was going to make a 'War Has Never Solved Anything! (Except Fascism, Slavery, Communism, and Tyrrany)', but I didn't have time to make a sign up...
Well, I guess I will go around and put up some of my own flyers like that.

The thing with these rallies and protests is that they are timed precisely to allow the vast majority to be people with no jobs who have nothing better to do. Those of us who would march FOR the war are busy working and supporting our families. I can't "cut" a work day to go rally for war like some of these numbnuts can just not show up for class that day.

Starting your own little pro-war rally during a peace protest sounds like a fun thing to do, even if you're opposed to the war but not willing to attend one of their protests.
Perhaps I'll do something like that when I get into college and there are still protestors (It's not likely, though).

College student-aged people are inherently liberal and anti-war, (although I am an exception) which is why you'll always get an unbalanced view of things by looking at things like rallies.Stravo wrote:The thing with these rallies and protests is that they are timed precisely to allow the vast majority to be people with no jobs who have nothing better to do. There was some kind of rally this morning as I was walking to my first class. Couldn't see the crowd, but I could hear their cheerleading-esque chanting about no war and crap. It's like a fucking popularity contest over on my campus, but most of these kids were pretty immature in highscool, as well.

Had some protests at my school, as mentioned in the old thread i started. Funniest thing that happened though was the dedication some students from a different school nearby showed to their cause. They walked down the main road and into the central part of the ringroad and they stood their calling out messages of peace and justice to passing cars .... until it started to rain. Yep, their dedicated allright.

Actually, I've met some intelligent folks who opposed an attack on Iraq. Initially, I opposed such an attack, but I also recommended a feasible and workable alternative. My gripe is with anti-war types who offer nothing as an alternative except, "We must allow inspections to continue," or "Just give peace a chance."weemadando wrote:I'm getting truly sick of all these people saying that all anti-war protestors are stupid hippies, who have no jobs and are bludging off welfare.
How about me saying that all pro-war people are gun-toting southern-baptist, white-supremacist, inbred, redneck, hilly-billy, goat-fuckers?

The vast majority of PROTESTORS (people who go out with signs) seem to be idiots with GIVE PEACE A CHANCE (didn't they say that is 1938?) and NO BLOOD FOR OIL (like how the US stole all Iraq's oil in 1991. Oh wait). But that's the media's coverage anyways.

I'm not in favor of the war. But if the same thing happened around my campus (which it might, a vast portion of my school's population is middle-eastern) and a bunch of pro-war types walked around with flyers, I would probably laugh. (edit: laugh because it's truly funny)
Personally, the main problem that I have with this war is that if a draft is instituted, people who do not want be in the military will have no choice. Plenty of young people will be forced to do what they don't want to do. If only it were possible... only the pro-war youth should go into duty, and the anti-war youth would have a lot less to worry about. And everyone gets to satisfy their itchy trigger finger.

Not a single anti-war protest or poster or anything at my high school as of yet. But I do live in Texas, and in a city with 4 air bases and an army base and a school with A LOT of military childern and lots of RotC nazis I don't expect much to any anti-war protests. But I hear some high schools here did, probly out in the boonies or the preppie ones.

There was a protest today at the San Francisco Civic Center, but I didn't go, so I don't know what happened. Stop the war by skipping school, right.

Probably the reason this was at 12:30... Right when I was in class so I couldn't go do some disruption to their meeting, hehehehStravo wrote:The thing with these rallies and protests is that they are timed precisely to allow the vast majority to be people with no jobs who have nothing better to do. The majority of these protestors with their liberal arts classes can skip a class or two and not miss much, while, with some chemistry, calculus, or engineering classes, you miss one class, and you can be set back for the rest of the year.
Fucking peaceniks... Low-life bastards with no brains, and too much time on their hands... Good work Talen, keep it up! (edit, reading posts is a *good* thing, jumping to conclusions as soon as you read "protests", "protestors" and "peace" and smashing at the person who made the post is a bad thing...)
Btw, I do have plenty of pro war stuff on me and have been giving the campus idiots-..uhm, I mean peaceniks a bit of a time.
A nice well-fought war (oh wait, we got shrubby in office so that rules that out...) would really boost our economy, which is needed right now rather badly.
To be honest I hate all types of protestors with the same passion, even if they're protesting for something I agree with, I just find'em annoying.
