The Anime Thread

As an anime fan, I have a duty to watch anime whenever I have the time. Recently I have been failing in that line of duty (Forgive me, goddess of anime, for I have sinned on behalf of my idleness...).

Can you guys recommend some good anime for me? Thanks.

Vandread (Lets see, Nirvana crew male... 3.. female crew.. 150 :D ): It's a hoot to watch.

Zone of the Enders: Dolores- Lotsa fun, especially with breaking the typical mecha anime cliches. Instead of the young prodigal ace pilot who doesn't like war the main character's a 45 year old alcoholic space trucker with two estranged children and a large collection of self help books :)

Hellsing- Vampires, big guns, and a psychotic catholic priest.

Tokyo Underground, the rest of Bebop, Trigun, Ghost in the Shell (and the Stand Alone Complex series), Outlaw Star, Excel Saga, Project A-ko, Patlabor 1 (if you like that then get yourself 2 and 3 as well and hunt down the series - basically they are cop shows that just happen to have Mecha in them), Blood, Appleseed, Bubblegum Crisis 2040, Gunsmith cats (if you like working women with guns... lots of guns :D ), Riding Bean, Spriggan (Mad, silly and full of big explosions, just try not to lauh as Noahs ark destroys the world  ), Hellsing, Chobits, Vision of Escaflowne:a girl from Gaea (if only for the opening 5 minutes), Wings of Honeamise, Macross Plus (the unedited 4 episodes, not the collected movie version), Ruroni Kenshin (unedited, plus the Samurai X OVA's), Gunbuster (well realised relativistic warfare, and schoolgirls in huge mecha, ah well :P ), Aaaaakiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiraaaaaaa (tetsuuuuooooo, Kaaaaneeedaaaa. ), probably a few more I'm forgetting, I'll add any I think of later, but PM Colin and he'll give you an even longer list, without duplicating any of mine I bet, the boy knows his Anime :D ).

Considering that this sort of request comes up every so often, might it not be worthwhile putting a Stickied anime recommendations thread somewhere (here or other Sci-fi) so people can find it striaght away. Or perhaps just a general Sci-fi Recommendations (Books, series, Anime, cartoons, mags, comics)?

I'm curious, why do you guys happen to like anime so much?
I'm sure there is some good anime, but all of it that I've seen has SUUUUUCCKKED.
The animation is piss-poor, the voice acting is ridiculous, the plots are convoulted.
Now I have seen a fair deal of anime, so it's not like just watching Pokemon (ughh) and saying that all anime is bad. I'm just saying the majority of it sucks.
(Please don't kill me. )
I can't stand anime anymore.

Because the animation is good, the (Japanese) voice acting is great, and the the plots are interesting. (and if I were trying to be pissy, I'd relate all that to American animation, or whatever's left of it. :P )

Listing the 'most' you've seen would help, as there's technically over a thousand out there.

And being less confrontational could help. Your post was almost entirely a very subjective opinion that screams flaimbait, mostly done by people looking for rabid anime fans to duel, in my experience. Try not to associate yourself with that crowd.

It depends on what you've seen, there's alot of bad anime out there, but anime covers a broad range of subjects (it's like saying "I'm sure there is some good movies, but all of it that I've seen has SUUUUUCCKKED. The acting is piss-poor, the scripting is ridiculous, the plots are convoluted.", see what I mean?), from cop drama's to war stories, to porn and of course Schoolgirls saving the world with giant Mecha's/magic powers/giant mecha with magic powers :D .

Also some of the translations from the English voice actors are... shall we say erratic? There's good stuff out there, and like in movies there are some shows or Anime films you watch because they are bad. Becareful never to come in in the middle of a series (you won't have a clue what's going on and so might end up hating it, when if you had seen it from the beginning you might well have liked it), and remember that like most things it, as a genre, tends to have it's own logic, and when tht clicks you can really settle in and enjoy it. Oh if you don't like Anime or not watched a lot, don't watch Excel Saga or Project A-ko as they are purely filed with injokes, so to (to a lesser extent) is Nadesico.

Like everything else it's horses for courses, if you like guns and near enough the ral world try Gunsmith Cats, see how that goes and then branch out into anything that covers your other likes.

Nah, they were good, but I prefer the 2040's.

Add to my previous list : Martian Successor Nadesico, and Dirty Pair Flash.

That reminds me, back in highschool I used to tell people that the average American film, when all the movies ever made were compared point-by-point, the mean/median film that summed up and balanced the premise of the entire country's industry...

...was Porky's.

Oh, and don't suggest Blood, unless you want an example you can point at and say: "yeah, that's a really short anime film without a plot. what the hell is supposed to be going on in the big picture, anyway?" It makes the gaps in plot explanation of Jinroh look like they really are just hard to pick out. :?
