Non-violence as a guiding principal in life is all well and good, but mindless, knee-jerk pacifism belongs on the same ash heap of history we've dumped Marxism (knee-jerk pacifists are almost always Marxists as well, something I'm sure would confound Marx).
Any city gets what it admires, will pay for, and, ultimately, deserves…We want and deserve tin-can architecture in a tinhorn culture. And we will probably be judged not by the monuments we build but by those we have destroyed.--Ada Louise Huxtable, "Farewell to Penn Station", New York Times editorial, 30 October 1963

dogbert: I dream of a world where everyone has given up weapons and forsaken violence.
dilbert: why dogbert! that's a wonderful idea!
dogbert: -thinking- if that were true, I could conquer the whole stupid planet with a butterknife.

Hmm I'm in two minds about Iraq on the one hand Saddamn needs to be dealt with, on the other... I'm not entirely convinced that the whole push for War is justified. I want a full debate before we begin, and it seems this may not be happening, recently in the Sunday papers, (or it may have been on Saturday) I read about a succesful ground operation in Iraw undertaken by American and British forces.
This is a huge area of concern for me, is my Blair trying to push us into a position where we really have no choice but to accept the War, because we are already at War with Saddam? In the end I may decide that War is really the only solution left regarding Saddam, but I want the chance to hear all the arguments before we are actually at War with Iraq, and not to wake up one day to find out that we are at War, and our assets are in place.
I want to know what is likely to be the response from the other Middle East countries to a war, will they support Saddam, and if so Why? Basically I don't want to find out that we are in a tactically stupid position sneaked upon us by the Government in it's need to show America and Bush what good friends we can be.

Because Australia often ends up in the same position as the UK when America goes to war, I agree with everything you say here.
I used to think of myself as a borderline pacifist. Then you-know-what happened ...

heh, I've always liked guns and war stories. . . but I'd like more reason for attacking iraq then we've seen.
