MoO - This game rocks!

On Thursday I got home from school and decided to fire up Master of Orion for a quick game. I ended up playing for hours before finally smashing the rest of the galaxy in the Final War (the Sakkra having won the Senate early on). Whew. Does anyone have any good tactics/strategies? I blame most of my problems in that game on the fact that I am really bad at it.

First of all, don't bother taking back a rebel planet by force. Just drop some bio pods into the atmosphere and kill the rebels.
Then move right back in.

I've never been given the option of bombarding rebel colonies. Even if I were, killing everyone would mean having to send another colony ship to rebuild it. I'm playing MoO1, not MoO2.

ACK! The GUI in that is worse than 3's!

I agree that the graphics are bad but I feel the game is better. I play roguelikes; it takes more than bad graphics or a slightly clunky interface to get in the way.

I find myself still playing MOO2. Easier to understand than 3.

Original MoO is undoubtedly best game in the series, altough it has became a bit too easy after years of playing.

Never got into MoO. MoO2 was better. Now need to figure out if I'm going to buy MoO3, or what.

I need to find a new copy of the first one, my 3.5" disks were placed on top of a Microwave by my niece...

Speaking of antiquated games, I have the original Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon on a set of 5 1/4" floppies lying right here...

First of all, don't bother with large warcruisers packed with weapons. Use fighters and missile corvettes, that you will be able to produce in hundreds, and later - thousands. You'll be surprised to see what ten thousand little fighters armed with two neutron pellet guns can do to an enemy force :)

Arm your missile ships with scatter packs as soon as you get them. I personally use small, fighter-sized ships with one nuke on board first, then move to medium chassis and load it up with scatter packs. If you get, say, two scatter pack VIIs on board, a salvo made by a mere ten ships equals seventy missiles. And considering that I usually have HUNDREDS of those little beasts, no amount of enemies is going to stand up to those. Missile corvettes are also great for destroying defensive emplacements.

Hope it helps :)

Thanks for the tip. I'd already figured out the missile corvettes, but not the fighters. I guess I was blind and didn't notice how annoying those enemy fighter swarms could be even with my complete tech dominance.

If you have complete tech dominance, you'll be able to pack your fighters with fusion beams, shields, fast hyperdrives and specials. Can you say: OVERKILL? :)

Oh yeah. I was pleasantly surprised to find I could cram a mauler device and subspace teleporter into a medium hull. A couple score of those babies was enough to take down the Guardian in two rounds.

The last time I fought a Final War against the rest of the galaxy, each one of my planets was cranking out a dozen of ultra-cheapo missile corvettes each turn. They were dying easily, but I could simply send more and more into the fray, scorching planets as I went. Boy, I don't think there is EVER gonna be a game that will allow you to fight battles where hundreds of thousands of missiles are flying around each turn...

What are your favorite races?

I like playing Psilons (techwhore) and Meklar (super production). If I knew exactly what playing Klackons meant I'd probably do it more too.

Meklars have increased factory controls - eg. they can have more factories than other races at the same tech level. Klackon factories are simply more effective than normal ones.

As to races, I always play humans. I like being able to talk myself out of practically any war I get into, and ripping off other races with trade bargains (I get soooooo much more than them)

Plus, identification with those bloaty-headed psilons comes somewhat hard for me :P
