What the bloody HELL is this?

Post by Sektor31 »

Lately on my dad's comp, which has WinXP home edition, he's been getting these messages from some nameless person. They are regular dialogue boxes with advertisements, such as a link and some info, or some crazy shit inside.

The most recent message was a child porn site.

Someone tell me what's going on? It says stuff like "Windows Messenger message", but when I check if MSN or some other messenger program is on, there's nothing there.

I hope that it's not internal spyware, because if it is I'm ripping Dell and/or Microsoft a new one.

Disable Windows Messenger.

Can't give details since I downgraded to Windows 98.

It's not spyware per say but rather another Microsoft 'feature.'

To get rid of it, go into the services administration panel and disable the messenger service.

This thread should be helpful.

Just in case you're wondering where that is, Go to Control Panel, select Performance and Maintenance, select Administrative tools and then click on the Services Shortcut. It'll bring up a seperate window, scroll down and click on Messenger, this will give you the option to stop it.

Sorry if you're actually Comp/XP savvy Sektor31, but I find it helps to spell it out, just in case people aren't sure.
