DBZ originally supposed to have ended at Freeza Saga

Akira Hasegawa wrote:"Inu Yasha" is published on "Weekly Shounen Sunday" along with "Detective Conan" and "Tenshina Konamaiki". "Inu Yasha" and "Detective Conan" are the two top main attractions of "Weekly Shounen Sunday" magazine. It'll be a great loss of readership if "Inu Yasha" ends. There is a lot of pressure(?) from readers and editors to prolong popular manga as much as possible. Right now in manga, "Inu Yasha" is searching for the last piece of "Shikon no Tama". It'll be funny if it breaks and scatters around the world again ^ ^;
A couple of manga suffered from editors' pressures (I know) are "Dragon Ball", "Slam Dunk", "Yuu Yuu Hakusho" (all from "Weekly Shounen Jump"). "Dragon Ball" was originally planned to end after "Freeza" episodes, but was dragged much longer than that. The author of "Slam Dunk" wanted to end the story after main team was defeated at the national tournament, but editors wanted to continue the comic. So rather than putting "The End" at the last page, it was written "Chapter 1 End".... "Yuu Yuu Hakusho" ended quite abruptly. I heard author was so fed up, he didn't want to write it anymore. Anyway, "Weekly Shounen Jump" is quite famous for dragging popular comics until authors get exhausted. Right now "Naruto", "Hikaru no Go", "One Piece" are the main attractions of "Weekly Shounen Jump". I'm pretty sure it'll run for a looooong time.

I've personally never heard of this interesting tidbit until a moment ago.

Old news. I'd known that since right around when Buu Saga appeared. Of course, my roomie's big into the series, so I'm bombarded with far too much useless DBZ trivia (such as who dies the most in the series and who the only Earth person to never die is).

I dont know about the manga aspects, but I'm glad Dragonball Z has run as long as it has. Though Buu seems to be dragged out a bit, ending at Freiza would be just strange, because you were just learning the true levels the fighters, the stories and the show could reach. The Android/Cell saga is great. Buu's is really good, but in a way, doesn't seem to have a personal feeling to it like The Cell saga did. Either way, I can't wait to see some GT episodes.

Milking cash cows until they bleed. Not really unexpected, but it has a marked effect on quality.

You should see in the manga where Yusuke first meets his father, pretty much doodles and scribbles

You'll be dissapointed.
Take it from a once hardcore fan. Facing the idiocy, the best thing to do is to declare the whole shit non canon, and stick to Dragon Ball (Z)

Right you are Col Olrik...Akira Toriyama wasn't even involved the the production of GT, Toei just used his characters

I semi-agree. I think the episodes at the very beginning of the Buu Saga, particularly the one where Goku arrives and is reunited with everyone, would've made the best ending. Maybe end with with the final match being between Goku and Vegita, and
not showing who wins(leave it to the reader's imaginations).

Thw whole, "editors forcing the writers to continue" thing, is very common in the Japanese comic biz.
Some writers/artists leave the Japanese market all together, and go to other countires to work.

Like Kia Asamiya (Silent Mobius, Steam Detectives), he did both the Star Wars manga comic and the X-Men manga comic..

I thought this was old news. Something about the fans not happy with the series ending.

I knew this some time...and thought "Eh so they milked it...what company really doesn't when there's a cash cow like DBZ?"

They should have ended it at the Cell saga. Goku was dead, Gohan was the new most powerful being in the universe... Krillin got the girl, and Trunks rebuilds the future. A happy ending all around.

You've got a great point there. I think some of the turn of events in DBZ during the Buu saga are piss poor. First off, Vegita was killed. Vegita is my favourite character. But he went out like a true Saiyan warrior. Then Buu comes back, and we find out Goku can go 3. Gohan is still alive and Old Kai shows up. Old Kai gives Gohan absolute power. Buu swallows Picalo, Gotenks, and Gohan leaving a newly alive Goku to battle alongside a revived Vegita. Whew, then they fuse seemingly forever into Veggito. They go inside Buu and split. Then they get seperated and never fuse again. Yet somehow Goku SS3 manages to beat Kid Buu albeit after a spirit bomb and help. I love the action, but up to that point the story was great. There could have been some major changes. MAJOR changes. However, if GT is a trade off of action for story, I'll be fine. That's one of the things I love about it. You get the story going, you get into it, and when the fights start, 'BAM' just thumping hits. heh.

Actually, he just plain does X-men now.
