Real life character shields....

Who do we know from history that seem to have had actual character shields that kept them alive when all in likelyhood they should have been dead?

So far I have......

Washington (the man had something like 12 horses shot out from underneath him, and pleanty of holes in his jackets/coats)

Hitler (survived WW1, Survived being GASED in ww1, survied numerous assination attempts, and I think he even a plane crash (not sure on this last one, he might have never been in a plane crash)

What do the rest of you know?

I'd definitely say Hitler. He checked out when he wanted to check out, and not before. Though, quite frankly, I always thought him a coward for doing that. Hell, he sent how many people to their deaths in a war, the least he could've done was go down shooting- bonus, it would've given a Russian soldier uber "lemme buy you a drink" points and untold numbers of documentaries about how he shot Hitler. With a full drum from his PPSh- just to be sure.

Alexander the Great, of course. He led from the front, and was an axe-chop away from decapacitation at Granicus river. Numerous times in the Far East he could have been easily killed - he nearly was storming a city in India, as well - and at every one of his battles took insane risks. It was part of why he won; his men followed him because he was willing to risk himself. One can debate the greatest military commander in history, but the boldest is very much fixed, I'd think - At least of the successful ones. (Charles Duke of Burgundy is actually called Charles the Rash - "The Bold" is a mistranslation.)

Tommie Thomas. Survived the Bata'an Death March; survived diphtheria untreated, voluntarily giving up the antitoxin to save a man who was worse off; and survived being in close proximity to three mortar strikes during the escape from Cabanatuan. The odds of any one of those three are poor; surviving them all is incredible.

Saburo Sakai, the leading Japanese ace to survive WW2 with 64 kills. That's hard enough. However in 1942 he was flying over Guadalcanal when he attacked a squadron of SBD dive bombers he mistook for fighters.

He got hit twice in the head with 12.7mm machine gun fire while having his plane badly damaged. Despite having only limited vision in one eye because of blood running down his face he flew back over 400 miles alone to land. Theoretically it was an impossible feat, as he didn't have fuel to fly for as long as he did. But he somehow got the engine to keep working on a much lower fuel flow. Sakai recovered, scored another twenty kills before being badly wounded again near the end of the war. He however recovered once more to live out his life postwar.

I haven't heard about a plane crash, but his plane barely avoided colliding with a factory chimney during his state visit to Finland.

That guy was fucking amazing. I liked his book "Zero" too.

I would say that Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry had a character shield in his battle against a British squadron at Lake Erie, though of course you could claim that he was very unlucky to have even been in that position due to a crappy subordinate officer's incredible lack of decisiveness or courage or both.
