How many month or years did you have it?

6 months

This is the second time it's broken.

In generally Sony makes OK laptops. Don't buy an IBM...it sucks. Either get an apple, or toshiba. (I recommend apple because its pretty fast when you compare it to another laptop of the same speed)

Yeah, Sony sucks. Their support is horrid and construction subpar.

Toshiba is decent, I've always been favourable to IBM's Thinkpads (especially the X and T series)

IBM? I've heard and experienced nothing but goodness from them - why don't you like them, brothersinarm?

EDIT: As for Apple, their laptops are generally excellent, but they don't run Windows; Beowulf seems to prefer x86 over PPC.

At least they've given us the Playstation.

I think Sony should stay away from making computers and stick with ordinary entertainment stuff.

My Viao has been with me for almost two years, but I had to take it apart to fix the LCD, since sending it in didn't fix the problem. I run a dual boot system on it now of Win 98 and SuSE Linux.

Nothing ran better or took more punishment than my Bondwell 310, years ago. Ah, you could bounce that thing off the pavement, and it wouldn't affect it.

The Playstation 2 is fairly unreliable, though - it's warranty is pathetic.

Sony has given us a system with a wonderful selection of software but horrible hardware. I have my issues with Nintendo, but Nintendo would never release consoles of such low quality as the Playstations are.

My Playstation 1 died out after a little over 4 years of heavy use.

My Playstation 2 broke and needed repairs after less than a year of use.

My NES and SNES still work fine.

Sony seems to have bad cunstruction in almost all electronics, my mavica went dead in less than 1 year.. grrr. Then my Brother's PS2 went dead in 6 months and he was depserate enough to stand in line at 4am for it.

I know everyone will probably laugh, but I purchased a refurbished COmpaq laptop straight from the complany and it works great. I have never had problem with it hardware or software wise adn the batterpower was decent enough to watch a 1 1/2 hour movie in teh DVD player and that's when a DVD rom was a brand new option.

Sony's professional line are the only products that I would trust. Those are actually built solidly. (I've used both the DSR-PD150 and DSR-200 DVCAM video cameras, both of them were excellent).

Id stay away from Sony laptops. Support is horrendous and the warrantys are very short.

IBM is my personal favorite, Toshiba and Dell are good ones as well.

Sorry, its kinda late. I had to work with Sony's at my last company and I really believe they do not belong in a corporate environment. However, execs like them for various reasons.

Well, you could have asked when you were first getting the laptop!

Yes, get an IBM laptop. IBM makes very good laptops. Even the used ones are pretty nice.

At a computer trade show around the area they were showing some old T23s (IIRC) and they looked great (though the nibs were a bit worn). IBM also has an eBay store with refurb'ed and older laptops as well if you don't need a brand-new T40 or something.

I have to chime in too...

as far as laptops go, I have to give the nods to just 4 makes in the consumer PC laptop category (I dont do macs, so cant say about them):

IBM
Toshiba
Dell
Gateway

add in the panasonic toughbook line if you want ruggedized (you trade off speed -- a lot of it -- though)
