Why a cultural icon? Why deface something that could only be hindered by war? Why not do it to a government building, something that represents the group that they OPPOSE?

Yes, I know they put it there because every shot you ever see of Sidney is of the Opera House. I was making a joke.

What a bunch of fuckjobs. Seriously, do they honestly think that I, after seeing them deface a country's national landmark, would sit up and suddenly think, "Gee, they're so pissed they're willing to deface pretty buildings! Maybe there really IS something to this whole anti-war thing!"? To be perfectly honest, this makes me want to turn the police loose on them and bash their knees in with night sticks. It's one thing to protest policies you don't agree with, but when you start vandalizing public property, that's another story entirely. Way out of line.

There's people who can take an intelligent stand against the war, and there's people who go to protests and hurl moronic slogans. The people who did this were of the latter persuasion, of course.

Well, it was vandalism of a landmark, plain and simple. Besdies, the only thing that can stop a war now is Saddam's exile. It's this kind of moronic behavior that has embarrased the entire anti-war movement.

This is more damaging. Freedom fries is just kind of stupid. Vandalizing the Opera House will piss off a lot of people, and will push people away from the cause.

<shrug> Being as I'm a hawk, you're not going to see many tears from me about it if that's true. How important a symbol is the Opera House to the average Australian? It looks good on postcards and attracts tourists, but how important emotionally is it down there? The more important it is, the stupider the act was.
