Not to be too provocative, but has anyone noticed the massive disparity in mainstream media towards Jewish "history" in film?

I refer to the countless old testament based movies made in the past century, not to mention the stage shows and musicals.

I mean what would happen if I tried to make a "Prince of Egypt" (Disney) version of Prophet Muhammeds life? I'd be sent off to Camp X-ray for being an Al'Qaeda sympathiser trying to indoctrinate the youth of America before you could say boo.

What about a tale of Buddha's life done Josephs Technicolor Dreamcoat style? Fundies would be barricading theatres across the world.

Why is this so?

America, at least, is a country full of Judeo-Christians. Duh. No one is going to finance a movie about Muhammad, because no one is likely going to pay to see it.

I should also add that a movie about Buddha's life was made about ten or so years ago. I do not think it was extremely successful, however.

Most people in the USA are some flavor of christian even if very moderatly. You mix that with the fact that the stories of the Old Testament are known well enough in most of the countries where these movies are shown that the studios don't need to worry about explanations. Plus, yeah, the fundies would go apeshit over a film about Mohommed or some "heathen" prophets.

Wasn't it called Little Buddha or something? I remember that it was pretty boring when I saw it. Of course, this was years ago.

In America, it's perfectly acceptable to make childrens' movies about an Old Testament terrorist God mercilessly butchering the helpless children of Egypt in order to make a point, and then tell everyone to worship him in his moral perfection.

Unless people buy into a fucked-up value system like that, they will reject it forcefully. Hence, they only reject it whenever they see it in any other religion, which is why a film praising the rise of Islam would never make any money in the US.

Partly because a lot of them don't really care. But the Old Testament and New Testament are pretty different in how they say one should worship God.. but then that gets into a whole theological discussion about Old versus New Covenant.

I got into a debate about that. And they even say well it's in the OT and not in the NT as if that makes it alright. Which I responded with, asking if the OT is part of the Bible and so still right. Still haven't got a response.

Aaaaaw, really? I kind of liked it. It was a pretty cool movie as he pretty much degenerated into madness

It had some funny moments here and there, but its politics were horrible.

Well, it was blatantly truthful though. You have to admit, our so-called moral leaders and such are FAR FAR from it. The public only gets to the vote for the lesser of the evils, and occasionally we get lucky.

I think it's because Jews are a very numerous and influental religious group in the USA.

By the way, Scientology tried to make a movie based upon THEIR "holy book", (well, one of them) Battlefield Earth, but it is only remembered for one thing, and that's its reputation for being the worst movie adaptation of a sci-fi novel ever.

Not to sound like an idiot, but Return Of The Jedi actually promotes a similar "The Ends Justify The Means" mentality - ever heard of the Endor Ewok Holocaust?? Somehow, ROTJ justifies the infliction of collateral damage on such a massive scale as long it helped overthrowing a tyrannical regime.

But it is a similar mentality that lies behind it, which is "The Ends Justify The Means."
