I just finished this fascinating missive by Frank Hipper over on the 'What are You Reading Now" thread...
...and also A Brief History of Time/The Universe in a Nutshell (Stephen Hawking), again, for comprehension. It actually is a lot easier to grasp, this time around.

Just finished Fear To Tread by James Swallow. Not sure why, but it was vastly more readable than his other BA stuff, which is nice. Pretty good explanation of where the Red Thirst/Black Rage came from, and the reintroduction of the Librarius to the BA ranks.

Huh, didn't even know there was a new Wraith Squadron book, but I guess I'd have to read most of the stuff post-VotF to fully grok it. Is it any good?

I haven't read it, so can't give a review. However, I do know that the book was written for a stand-alone role, so you should be generally fine leaving out the shit before it.Dalton wrote:Huh, didn't even know there was a new Wraith Squadron book, but I guess I'd have to read most of the stuff post-VotF to fully grok it. I'm blitzing back through my collection of Xanth books right now, just for kicks. It's hilarious to me just how many of the sexist elements I missed in the books when I first read them (over 12 years ago, as a midschooler). I have yet to read a non-sexist female character, I think.

Re: What Are You Reading Right Now 2.0
I liked it well enough. Since it's been half of NJO, LotF, and FotJ since we've seen any of the Wraiths in any other than a passing cameo, it's more of a "passing of the torch" novel, where new Wraiths are introduced with a few of the last generation of Wraiths. A lot of the stuff in-between is glossed over or summarized via flashback, and I don't think you need to have read any of that stuff to enjoy this one. Hopefully this is what it seems like: a jumping off point for Allston to write more Wraith stuff in the Legacy post-FotJ era.Dalton wrote:Huh, didn't even know there was a new Wraith Squadron book, but I guess I'd have to read most of the stuff post-VotF to fully grok it. Re: What Are You Reading Right Now 2.0
I just finished Caliban's War by Daniel Abraham/Ty Frank. It was a great page-turner, and the first book to keep me up really late reading it in months. Good interplanetary space opera, although don't go into it expecting Diamond-Hard SF.
I keep meaning to try out the Obsidian and Blood trilogy omnibus that I have sitting on my shelf, but I just haven't been able to get myself to get started. I think I will like it once I start it, because I really enjoyed the first novel in the trilogy (the whole series is basically Urban Fantasy set in the Pre-Columbian Aztec/Mexica Empire, and the author has seriously done her research).
I'm also waiting for Cloud Atlas from the library, but that's taking forever.

The Return of Tarzan
After I finished the last Barsoom novel, I was itching for some more Burroughs, so I downloaded Tarzan of the Apes from Project Gutenberg. I enjoyed the hell out of that, and Return is so far just as good, though the plot meanders a bit in the middle. I just wish I had more free time to read the damn thing.

Re: What Are You Reading Right Now 2.0
Just Finished Post Captain Which ends. Very abrubtly. When Aubry helps take the spanish flota ( a historical incident) but weirdly before we found out he's not going to get any prize money for it.
Also Aubrey and Maturin suddenly forget they're supposed to be having a duel halfway through the book. They sort of reconcille without ever mentioning it after Aubrey sinks his shitty ship.
Still not sure about Patrick O'Brien there seems to be awful lots of waffle about the character with the actual military actions and swashbuckling dealt with very breifly.
Is it worth continuing to HMS Surprise? I've read about half of the first chapter (contained in the back of Post Captain) and it seems to be more of the same.

Some authors are tongue-in-cheek with their main characters (Hiro Protagonist). Some beat you over the head with allusion - the name of the squadron featured in this book is the White Knights.

I'm reading "The deed of Paksennarion" which I can't spell, by Elizabeth Moon. It's an omnibus of the first three in the series, and is just as good as her sci fi work so far. It got a bit slow in the middle but its looking up again.

So I stare wistfully at the Lightning for a couple of minutes. Two missiles, sharply raked razor-thin wings, a huge, pregnant belly full of fuel, and the two screamingly powerful engines that once rammed it from a cold start to a thousand miles per hour in under a minute. Life would be so much easier if our adverseries could be dealt with by supersonic death on wings - but alas, Human resources aren't so easily defeated.
