Anyway, the comp I'll be getting in 3 weeks have a 3.06GHz Pentium 4.

What motherboard and RAM will go best with it?

RAM = As much as you can get in it

MoBo = Do some shopping around, I really do not know which would be BEST, but alot of suppliers sell boards

Get a motherboard with DDR Ram, so you can take advantage of your CPU power.

Actually, some people have strongly recommended that I take RDRAM (Rambus) over DDR. Apparently a P4 armed with RDRAM kicks the stuffing out of one with DDRs.

Though filling it with 1 gigabytes worth of RDRAMs is gonna be pretty expensive but we'll see.

PC1066 beads DDR266, although I'm not sure about DDR333.

You can run just about anything. But what toys are you getting on it? Scanner? DVD burner? Raw CPU power is good for showing off, but not as useful in realistic terms as the extra toys.

I have a scanner already, though not a flatbed. My dad has a flatbed.

Included will be a DVD-RW drive.

And there's a bunch of USB ports in there so if I want to do anything USB then I'm settled.

Jesus, they're up to 3 Ghz now?

Intel never made a 1.4GHz P4. The P4 started at 1.7GHz. The only Intel chips that were ever available at 1.4GHz were the P3 and the P3-based Celeron.

Get a motherboard that supports hyperthreading. You're wasting your P4 if you don't - and that means DDR SDRAM. Also, use XP Pro, since W2K will not properly support hyperthreading.

Asus makes good motherboards, though their quality is a bit less than it once was (and they are pricey). Stay far, far away from ECS/Elitegroup - they suck. Abit sometimes has quality control problems (e.g. bad capacitors)

You know you can apparently rip the heat sink of a P4 and not have any damage to the CHU from overheating? (links:

Correct. Properly-designed motherboards for the Athlon XP will also do the same to prevent catastrophic damage (THG caught quite a bit of flak over that).

Yeesh, okay ... I'll draft the appropriate memo from Grey Six. It's coming from Coruscant, so it'll arrive probably late this afternoon...

Someone merge that other comp related thread into this one somehow. I think they'd be more organized that way.

GENUINE INTEL PENTIUM 4 and has a clock speed rating of 1.5 GhZ

Q: At what speeds are boxed Pentium 4 processors available?
A: Pentium 4 processors are currently available at operating frequencies from 1.40 GHz to 3.06 GHz. See all available speeds.
That's from the intel website. Strange, I thought there was a 1.3ghz model but nevermind.
