NFL 2014 offseason/draft thread

Post by Thanas »

Demarcus Ware was just released by the Dallas Cowboys.

Jerry Jones had no other card left to play thanks to his mismanagement.

And for 10m less than the dolphins paid Albert or the Raiders paid Saffold.....woohooo. 5 years, 35.7 mil, 19m guaranteed. Wow, that is cheap for a franchise LT.

Cowboy fans are up in arms over this. Not so much because the team is circling the drain, but because Jerry Jones will be in charge for at least another 15-20 years.

Niners have aquired Jonothan Martin. Some interesting moves getting him and Gabbert for late round picks. Classic low risk with potentially high reward considering the talent level. Have to see what Harbaugh can get out of them.

Yeah but why get cut then? Why not say no and continue to take the money? Is he hoping for a new longterm contract elsewhere after coming off a huge injury?

It seems fairly clear that the Patriots were going to cut him if he didn't accept the new deal. So it's really just a matter of spin.

Jets picked up Eric Decker. Interesting. I wonder if having a decent receiver on the team will bump up Geno Smith's numbers next season.

Most likely he will not be the starting QB if they pick up Vick.

Meanwhile, like father, like son:
Irsay was arrested in Carmel, Ind., and booked around 3 a.m. He was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and possession of a controlled substance, and his bond was set at $22,500.

He faces charges on four felony counts of possession of a controlled substance, and one misdemeanor count of operating while intoxicated.

Can't every NFL player call a special service and get a ride home, free of charge, no matter where they are? I guess they should extend that courtesy to coaches, too.

As for Vick, I'm not surprised that the Jets are looking at him(because they're idiots), but I just can't see that panning out. Vick is old and fragile--I mean, when was the last time he played an entire season? Geno Smith has many faults, but he is young and and has a fucking cannon for an arm.

The thing is though that Rex Ryan does not need a good QB, he just needs a below average one who does not turn the ball over en masse due to his defence. Which means that Vick with his experience might be better than Smith at this point and given that Ryan is working on 1-year contracts himself...

So he needs a caretaker/game manager, not a guy who fumbles and throws INTs because he's trying to be the hero.

So neither of the two? Sure, but who else is out there? Kyle Orton is probably going to be traded but he is worse than both. Who else? Another high draft pick?

Point is that Vick is better at reading defences than Smith is and commits fewer turnovers. That should be enough for Ryan.

Are we talking about the same Michael Vick? Vick was a turnover machine in Philadelphia.

Michael Vick:
77/141, 54.6%, 1,215 yrds, 8.62 average 5 TD 3 INT 3 Fumbles 58.7 QBR in a total of 7 games

Geno Smith:
247/443, 55.8%, 3,046 yrds, 6.88 average, 12 TD 21 INT 4 Fumbles, 35.9 QBR in a total of 16 games
Even if you double Vicks turnovers he does not reach the level of Smith. If you triple and even quadruple them he does not sink to Smith's level.

Yes, Smith is that bad that a guy who put up 6 turnovers in 7 games is considered an update.

I have now written two rebuttals and the universe has eaten both (once from a crash, second from a neighbour interrupting me).

So I'll keep this short:

I don't think it would be smart for the Jets to hire Vick as a mentor for Geno or as a replacement, as he would be poor at both roles. If you compare Fumbles/INTs to games, Geno's numbers are comparable to Vick's over the last few seasons (Vick has had a small sample size in 2013 and a run-first offence, Geno has been fortunate to have the Jets retain possession of most of his fumbles).

I disagree, I think a run-first offence is exactly what the Jets will run next season. If Vick is signed I think he will win any legitimate battle against somebody with just one year as a starter.
