I'll read the movie reviews in the paper tomorrow, and I might be able to make a better guess, but I'd say Basic, as I am personally biased against blatantly unscientific movies such as The Core.

Probably BASIC will win. I dont intend to see either. The Travolta film seems like a copy of the other Army film he did. "General's Daughter???"

General's Daughter is right. I think Basic will beat the shit out of The Core simply because of Travolta and the legions of Scientologists who'll buy movie tickets.

I suspect that the Core's scientific merits will be so poor that six year olds will be sitting in the theatre pointing out its realism flaws.
It's all well and good to say that the public doesn't care about realism, but you have to wonder if the Core is some kind of sociological experiment to see just how far you can push that envelope.

I felt like screaming when I saw the Space Shuttle skidding out like a car.

Oh man, I forgot about that. What the HELL.

I'm going to open the newspaper and see that "The Core" had top earnings this weekend. I just know it. I'm crying already.

BASIC? I haven't seen any ads, previews, posters, or anything on it.
Anyone know what the
general idea behind it is? Without spoilers hopefully, but if it was on a preview or ad it'd be fair game I guess. I'm just curious about all military movies in general.

Ive seen the ads and Im not really sure what the show is about other than there is an investigation of some sorts.

Any idea what the investigation's about?
And I gotta find that ad for The Core. The Space Shuttle skidding out? I could use a good laugh (as if "Gangsta Saddam" wasn't enough for one night).

Sadly I believe the Core will have more earnings only because it's shinier.

Don't forget Head of State! It will outdo both! It has elderly white people dancing to Nelly! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

What exactly was that scene like? Did the shuttle make a full stop in space, complete with the sound of tires skidding?
Is it PG-13? I think it is, and it means "If you have an IQ of over 13, then you will easily point out the bad science".

You see the Space Shuttle skidding on the ground in what looks like one of the Los Angeles water aquaducts.

IRRC the very first time the trailers were shown in theaters was before the Columbia(sp) accident.

I'd see Basic, if only for da Bad Motherfucker Jackson.
I can't stand such blatantly bad science...

My local newspaper made fun of The Core today in the movie review section! They didn't give it an F - they gave it a D - but soundly trashed the film.
At any rate, Spirited Away reopens tomorrow and I may go see it.

Reviews on RottenTomatoes are more negative than positive, but The Core hasn't been totally trashed. The positive reviews all say the movie knows it's silly. I might see it just for the pretty special effects. I'll see what AICN and Roger Ebert say.

I've seen it in advance (what a waste of a preview showing for me and a girl
). Will write review for SD.net first thing in the morning.

Frankly, both of them look pretty poor, but maybe that's just me.

A synopsis of "The Core" from my morning paper.
A geophysicist discovers that an unknown force has caused the Earth's inner core to stop rotating. With the planets's magnetic field rapidly deteriorating, our atmosphere literally starts to come apart at the seams. A team of gifted scientists is sent in to reactivate the core.
Ummm...yes...right...uh huh...sure....whatever...

I guess The cor is part of the recent trend in global catastrophic event movies,Armaggedon and Deep impact to name a few.
all major problem can be fixed with technobabble.

Even if a 1 gigaton uncontrolled explosion could set the core spinning again (it can't), it wouldn't set the core spinning at the exact same rate it was before, anyway. The inner core comprises about 2% of the Earth's overall mass, which pegs it at around 1.2E23 kg. The Earth's core rotates somewhere between 0.02 and 3 degrees per year. Just for estimation's sake, we'll call it 1 degree per year. That equates to 3.17E-8 degrees per second, or about 5.5E-10 rad/s.
The moment of inertia of a uniform sphere rotating about its center is
I = (2/5)mr^2,
where m is the mass and r is the radius. The radius of the inner core is about 2.6E6 m. So, its moment of inertia is 3.2E35 kg?m^2. Angular momentum is given by
p = Iw,
where w is the angular velocity. Thus, the total angular momentum of the Earth's core is 1.76E26 kg?m^2/s. This is the total amount of momentum that would have to be imparted in order to both stop the Earth's core from spinning (which is the problem in the first place, but no one mentioned where this huge amount of angular momentum traveling in the vector opposite the core's momentum vector comes from ... oh yeah, earthquakes snicker).
1 gigaton is about 4.2E18 J of energy. This is a large amount of energy, to be sure, but it's nowhere near enough to get the Earth's core spinning again at the same rate it was before. The linear momentum of an explosion is given by
p = U/c,
where U is the total energy and c is the speed of light. Even if all the linear momentum of the explosion was collected into a single torque and applied toward getting the Earth's core spinning again (which is can't be; 50% of it will inevitably be radiated away from the core entirely because explosions are omni-directional), that torque would have to move faster than the speed of light in order to generate the required change in angular momentum.
Of course, that's an overly simplistic explanation. But you should get an idea of what would be required to set the core spinning at the exact same rate it was. A nuclear blast won't do it.
However, the characters state that they are going to use a "nukular" blast to get the core going. While the exact properties of "nukular" weapons are unknown, it is certain that nuclear weapons will not get the job done, and that 1 gigaton of anything won't be enough.

I suppose you could rationalize it by saying the bomb was going to blow up the technobabble that stopped the core from spinning in the first place. Where the momentum of quadrillions of tons of spinning liquid iron went and how it comes back is totally beyond me, though.
