How is Shutterfly?

Post by Eulogy »

I recently won some "free" merchandise from Shutterfly, a place that deals in photos and gifts involving said photos. I say "free", because these items don't have free shipping and handling included. Why, I don't know.

Anyway, I started to read online reviews of Shutterfly, trying to get some sense of them as a company before even thinking of paying the S&H charges on the "free" merch, and of those I read, some were rave while a lot really didn't like Shutterfly. This being the internet, I didn't know what to think.

Has anyone here used Shutterfly before, and is there a way to reduce the shipping costs? I haven't checked out the cart yet.

I've only ordered photos from them in the past and for that it worked well. Shipping was pretty cheap and I was happy with how the photos turned out. And that's about all I can say, it works for photos.

Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either. :P

My family gets them for books commemorating large trips, and the quality seems to be good.

They're okay. The shipping is perhaps a bit more than the actual books are worth, but they're okay. We did a baby book for our kid with them (similar offer) and it turned out fine.

You could try Aldi Photos. Seems like a similar service for slightly more reasonable prices. Though certainly the freebie you have is with Shutterfly, so by all means use that first...

Everything they do seems rather kitschy. If you have worthwhile photos to print, I'd suggest finding a printing shop that will do it decently, which for a reasonable consumer price means: correct handling of files (no upscaling, correct usage of color profiles, etc.), adequate paper, iris/epson/etc. high-end inkjet printer.
