That's just the first episode. This will be a series where people from other places of the world will come and see how the nordic model and society works. First up is a retired american warden being given a tour in a norweigan prison. A future episode will also show differences in policing and such

First episode will play tonight on local TV, there's a trailer on youtube:

I wonder if there's gonna finnish subtitles for it seeing it's gonna air from YleFEM here and that's a swedish language channel.

They bought in from swedish SVT, it depends usually on the language of the show, english and other languages tend to get translated to swedish and swedish gets translated to finnish. They text all shows except live shows and childrens shows.

Show aired last night and it was mostly in swedish and some english. So perhaps not that attractive for most english people, but the producer of the series posted here and said they're working on getting it translated to english for a wider audience:

I'm definitely interested in seeing the other episodes where policing, religion, etc will be compared.

Dumb. This was obviously for the purpose of showing that America's systems suck. It should have been in English from the get go.

No it wasn't made for americans or english people (typical thinking though), it was made for people who live here and it's purpose is to have outsiders view, criticize and comment on the way we do things. It gathered interest outside its intended audience due to spreading on the internet and thats why the english translation thing is something considered after the fact like this.

Were there any criticisms that are, in your opinion, valid?

My bad. i just assumed it was to show the superiority over our crap systems, so not really typical thinking.

Raises the question of what might be learned from having a Norwegian prison warden go on a fact-finding mission to a US prison, although I can't see much chance of getting that idea off the ground.

He didn't really bring forth any I felt where relevant to the type of criminals we got here. Also note that he visited many prisons. Halden prison was the most extreme and considered a social experiment by norway to see how humane treatment affects reclitivism.

He seemed to approve of the swedish Kumla prison in comparison, which was the most USA like prison. I mostly got impressions of him rather than of us. Such as his "it's your fault you are here" talk, that does not acknowledge the reality of the situation and flaws in the justice system and just plain bad laws that might put someone unjustly in prison.

Damn, I missed this. Fortunately it looks to be available in the Areena service of Yle for the next 28 days. http://areena.yle.fi/tv/2428667

Will have to watch that.

only place he seemed outright hostile towards seemed to be the Halden facility with even the finnish facility getting some level of approval.

Oh, I thought Norden was a pun on a warden visiting a Norwegian prison, but it's an entire series?

Yes the name is a weird combo of english and swedish, Norden means the nordics, so the "The" is kinda redundant. I know of three guests from america, the warden, a police officer and a priest. There's also a russian woman and an italian guy. They will cover different aspects each.

Just stumbled over an article about it - about how shocked the man was to realize the nordics don't believe in god, in general.

article with video (scenes from the series)

Tonight the episode is about gender equality and the guest is a woman from Russia this time.
