India has progressed a lot in the last half century but they still lag in numerous areas. One of the most notable of which is the disposal of human waste. In India about 58% of the population defecates in the public, more than any other country both in terms of absolute numbers and per capita.

The situation is the worst in the northeast of India and in rural areas. Make no mistake this is a huge concern. Millions of tonnes of human waste just left about to rot in the sun is a breeding ground for disease, especially in a densely populated country. Basically India needs to engage in a massive set of public works programs to expand their Infrastructure make lavatories lower these levels down as much as possible before disaster happens. Draconian enforcement of anti-public defecation laws would also be a good idea, but the Infrastructure definitely needs expanding.

It's certainly a shitty state of affairs. They need to cut the crap and get some movement going on. This won't be resolved until the bowels of the country are thoroughly flushed.

Butt that would require some heavy investment. They don't have the money to buy squat, with their market plunging as it is.

Toilets for the Toilet God! Shitters for the Throne of Khrap!

For the areas described you don't just need toilets you need sewers or septic tanks. And treatment plants at the other end. And money to pay people to clean and run it. Large as their population is, it's not very dense in the north rural areas.

There are some cool initatives in the slums. Look up 'slum networking' for the plans regarding streams, slums and middle class areas.
