Horticulture question

I think I'd like to replace part of my fence with a hedge.
I really like the look of Blackthorn and would love to use the sloe berries for brewing and the wood for canes/tool handles/etc.
My question is: Is it possible/practical to get Prunus Spinosa to thrive in zone 8a (N. Texas)?
Some sources say it's hardy up to zone 7, other sources say up to 9. So I'm thinking it may be possible, but with some special care required?
