free virus updates?

Anyone know an anti-virus scanner you can get which you can get free updates for? For any version of windows. And they may have already thought of it, but what about instead of scanner which must be updated periodically, how about something that compares the code of program against the genuine code that's supposed to be there, and if it finds something that doesn't belong there it deletes it?
