Thread resurrection
Why is this considered such a grave offense? The only answer I've ever seen for the hostile reactions some people have to this is that, if the thread has died, there is no interest in it. The implication apparently being that if interest was lost in it once, there can never be any interest in it again. This is bullshit, since if it has been posted in, there obviously is interest in it. It seems like some people just have an irrational hatred of threads that have not been posted in for a few of days, even if those threads are still on the first page.
I think it would be a good idea for Mike to come up with an official policy on what is and is not acceptable regarding old threads. Now the question becomes whether or not it would be productive to PM him about it versus just posting a thread, like this one. (no offense, Mike, just observation)

In addition to that, I would like to say that in forums like Off-Topic and SLAM, it might be wise that even though there has been something discussed, there are always new members with different views, and many times, people's views change as time goes along. So a lot of the time, it's a double-edged sword ~ resurrect a thread, and die, or talk about an already-discussed thread, and die. [shrugs]

If you ressurect a thread for a good reason that's fine. If you contribute to the discussion fine. And I for one delete all the post that are just whining about it.
And if you want to bring up a topic that's been discussed then I'm all for that as well.
Oh, and the "bump" just gets the post deleted.

I think that if you resurect a thread with a ' ' kind of mentality is kind of pointless. If you actually contribute to the thread then I don't see a problem.

Most of the other MBs I frequent consider thread resurrection a sin second only to spamming. This usually results in a tempban on whoever did it and a thread locking. Never saw the point in doing that myself, as the possibility stands that the new entry has something to contribute. It might be easier to simply create a new topic with a link to the old thread, though, if only to avoid vertical spam from previously read messages.

I don't have a problem with posting as normal in threads less than a week old, or two-three week old threads so long as it's some new point or addition to the post.
but when people go digging around in the December-January posts (or July-August. You know how you are, shame shame), and necromance it to just reply "yeah, I agree with the points already brought up", it's just beating a dead horse that went down because everything had already been discussed.
If you want to discuss a two or three month-old subject, post a new thread and see if you get any hits. Otherwise, maybe you need to evaluate what your exact intention is. Sometimes it seems that people create or bring up discussion topics without any real intent to discuss or conclude anything. Find another conversation subject, then.

No, it means that if they dig up an old, dead thread to simply say "yeah, I agree" then they're annoying. If you want to contribute something significant to the debate then that's fine but ressurecting threads just to ressurect them is annoying.BrYaN19kc wrote:So, in other words, new members may read older threads but should resist from commenting on them or starting a new thread along a similar topic line?
