This is just a weird thought that occurred to me right now -- (okay, so the Ethnicity thread had something to do with it): Does anyone here know where blue eyes came from in humans? The earliest recorded people to have them, how they might've developed, etc.?

Are blue eyes supposed to be special?

Just a random mutation that was not harmful enough to be selected out. Since eyeballs rot quickly, there is no physical evidence as to when they developped. The earliest records (I believe) of blue eyed people are from India and Greece, generally noted in northern migratory peoples, but there is no way to know how far back the trait goes.

Recessive trait that probably just came along while we were in our infancy as modern humans. Probably just a mutation at first, a mutation that made little or no difference to whomever had it happen. That individual merged in with the breeding population and nw today women have the benefit of gazing into my sky blue beauties.

You know, I would guess that blue eyes, like red hair, probably originated from a geographically isolated population.
