I want to play airsoft, but to buy the equipment and such would probably run me up to $500.

With that money I could probably buy a nice real rifle. But the rifle I'm looking towards costs about a $1 per shot and I wouldn't be able to fire it that often. So, I'm in a pickle guys.

Get the rifle, airsoft is lame.

I'd go for the rifle myself, but you get whatever you'll get the most enjoyment out of.

BTW what kind of a rifle are thinking about buying?

Get the rifle, there's no substitute for the real thing. I use to shoot airguns a lot but after spending a couple days on the shooting range with the real thing I doubt I'll be going back. Right now I'm in the middle of taking firearms safety and instruction lessons and I plan on getting my firearms certificate later on this year.

I'd recommend a less-expensive rifle.

You can't shoot your friends with a rifle. That's all airsoft's really good for, but it's a lot of fun.

Of course you can shoot your friends with a rifle, the only problem is you'll kill them doing that, and they won't be your friends anymore if they live.

Indeed.
It does give you a warm feeling, being able to point a G3 at somebody and empty a clip into them at full chat. Plus, in a country where firearms are controlled to the point of near extinction, it's cool to have an assault rifle sitting beside your bed, even if it is largely ABS plastic.

I say get a rifle. And screw the shooting ranges, nothing is more fun than being a clocktower sniper.
