A industry source for has informed us that Hasbro, the toy manufacturer of the G.I. JOE line, may be close to closing a new deal with a major Hollywood studio for the film rights to JOE. For the last few years the rights were controlled by producer Lawrence Kasanoff (MORTAL KOMBAT) and his Threshold Entertainment production company. According to the 4Filmmakers website, a deal between Kasanoff and Warner Bros. existed. Nevertheless, the 4Filmmakers site hasn't updated its G.I. JOE page for more than two years, meaning the WB/Kasanoff partnership is old news in Hollywood.
According to our source, Hasbro has closed or is very close to closing a deal with none other than DreamWorks Pictures for a JOE movie.
In recent years the G.I. JOE franchise has seen a resurgence in pop culture. A new line of toys and a hit comic book series have returned JOE back to older fans and created a new wave of popularity with younger individuals.
While our source could not confirm with absolute certainty that DreamWorks was close to acquiring G.I. JOE rights, another source (speaking off the record) said that a new deal with a Hollywood company was imminent. Could that be DreamWorks?

GI Joe with DreamWorks animation could be interesting, though I'd be afraid of some rapid anti war thing being spawned.

I still have some of my G.I. Joe/Action Force vhs tapes up in my roof space. I may have to hunt them out for the reasons of nostalgia.

Hmm, this could be interesting, if done correctly.
But, I am with Skimmer, with who is running Hollywood and whatnot, it would be easy for this to get turned into a movie with rabid anti-war undertones.

Reminds me of those CGI G.I. Joe comertials they had running for a while. I thought it WAS going to be a movie.

GI Joe....now thats one thing that I miss when I look back on my early childhood. A movie by Dreamworks would flat out kick ass. They've done some WONDERFUL movies in the past. (if it wasn't plainly obvious that I'm a fan of their stuff just by avatar alone.....) This is a good thing people. A VERY good thing.

That is, unless the previously stated happens, and the soccer mom generation gets ahold of it and deems it too 'violent' and 'militaristic' and tones it down so much that it looses the G.I. Joe flavor. Heck, if half of them saw the huge army man battles we had back in grade school, they would have a heart attack...

While Hollywood people might be somewhat pacifist, one of USA's biggest TV networks (can't remember which) is partly owned by Lockheed-Martin, one of the biggest manufacturers of military aircraft. So I don't think the media is that antimilitaristic.

If I'm thinking of the same thing their talking about, if you notice after the first or second season or so of the tv show things started getting a bit "wacky". Same thing after the first live action movie. Ever notice how in the second movie they barlely touched their weapons?

The media are only a segment of the entertainment industry, that indsutry will show what it thinks a target segment of the population wants to see. It could easily go either way.

Could be the large amount of violence had to be toned down.
What annoyed me was that they never killed anybody. They're ninjas with pointy weapons, well except for Mike, they should get to kill people.

Yeah, Mortensen would make a good Duke - but I don't think he looks
exactly like him.
BTW, if there gets a live action GI Joe flick made, I hope Arnie Schwartzenegger gets a part, even if it's just a cameo.

No, but if there was a lot of fuss over the American version of Power Rangers... the people who complained should have seen the Japanese version.
BTW, I do remember people accusing "Biker Mice From Mars" of promoting fascism.

Just the fights kids would start and kick the crap out of eachother with "ninja kicks" and the like. Of course, they all blamed the TV show for "influencing" their kids.

Considering Ninja's are asassins by trade thats weak as hell. We need more murder on TV.

Considering Ninja's are asassins by trade thats weak as hell. We need more murder on TV.
Reminds me of the Calvin & Hobbes comic strip where Calvin says that by the age of 6, most children will have seen a thousand murders in TV and that he must have seen the wrong shows.
