Reestablishing network connection?

Oh how joyous.
Well, my internet connection died for a bit, then came back. Problem is that I no longer had access to the internet. I tried repairing the connection only to get a "Cannot renew IP address" message and ipconfig reveals that my default gateway is gone. Rebooting is the only way to fix it.
Suffice to say, it's quite annoying and I'm wondering why this is happening.

Nope, no router. 3Com NIC though.

The reason I asked is because I had that problem a couple of times with my cable modem/router/XP workstation. I went to static IP's for my XP workstation and NT server and never had the problem again.
I also have a 3com NIC.
Sorry, couldn't help ya on this one.

Try "IPCONFIG /RENEW", assuming you're using an NT-based OS.

I try disabling the network connection, then re-enabling it. Or try turning the router off, then on, and try again.

Tell us a little more about your network? Im assuming this is at home? Like Mike said, try ipconfig /renew to get a new lease from your DHCP server.
If you are using a cable modem with DHCP address, Ive seen it where you need to power cycle the modem once every 3-4 weeks and everything is back to normal.
If you are using Windows 98, it is easier to use winipcfg instead of ipconfig.
Go to Start--->Run , type winipcfg and renew the address for the 3COM adapter.

Does your cable modem show a connection?
Is your NIC's connection light on in the back?

Let me explain it a little better...
OK, let's say that I lose connection. Fine, this happens every once in a while - I usually can't tell since the modem retains it's "connected" status even when it loses connection; it eventually comes back, but I unplug the modem and plug it back in to help it along. So when it does, all the lights are green and I assume I'm good to go. I recheck the network status; it seems like I can send and receive packets just fine. However, Trillian and Mozilla both can't connect. I try repairing the connection, but after a while I get an error message saying it couldn't renew my IP address. I check ipconfig and find my default gateway blank, and the only thing I can do to fix it is reboot.
Next time I might try removing the ethernet cable and putting it back in. I'm running on Optimum Online, direct from the modem to my computer.

It's entirely possible your ISP simply has a balky DHCP server with a short lease time. This is not uncommon, and it's one of the reasons I went with Bell.

You probably dinged it, but the only other broadband provider in the immediate area is Verizon DSL...
All I want to do is renew it without having to reboot, hence why I'm gonna try unjacking it and rejacking it.
