AB Rant #2: Movie Previews.

Post by Anarchist Bunny »

Am I the only one that HATES movie previews. They compile most of the movie down in the 30 seconds, giving away the coolest/funniest scenes and giving away important info.

Wouldn't you have like to not know who the villian of spiderman was til you saw it, or the best jokes from Mr. Deeds or MIIB to make them more watchable. Or wouldn't Jason X have been a little better if you didn't know anything about cybo-Jason?(and if they had followed the early script more, older Jason X script fucking rocked, it was halarious, and all the Jokes were cut out for... nothing. Also the relation between the teacher and the student wasn't just wierd sex, she accually loved him in the script. And the fight scene was made by .... I might just make a rant out of this one day)

I read an article on this subject just last month, actually. It seems that in order to try to appeal to the greatest number of demographics, preview makers have to include a bit of everything each market segment "wants." The preadolescents get big explosions, women get the mushy scenes, adult males get T&A, etc. By the time all of these requirements are met, most of the movie is already crunched into the 150 seconds that the average trailer lasts as an inadvertent side-effect. Kind of sad, really.

I agree. So many movies would be much better if the previews didn't give so much away.

The other day I was thinking about this when watching the TPM. I know they got the hype way up there by showing Darth Maul and his double bladed light sabre but just think if they wouldn't have shown that in the preview. Then his full appearance wouldn't have been known yet and his activating both blades would have been a surprise that I think would havd added to TPM.

Instead they used him to get people really excited about a movie they would have gone to see anyway.

TOTALLY DISAGREE

Yep, that's right folks I am going against the grain on this one. I have a part time job as a projectionist, so I deal with this subject matter intemently. I love the trailers, it's how I make my assesment as to whether or not I will be bothered in seeing a movie, and I must say I do 'see' all the movies, part of my job, however I only take others to see a movie that I at least think would be good.

I base this assumption on the trailer, if it looks funny, but is a sequel *cough MIB II* then previous knowlege will tell me that most likely those were the best jokes, and I don't go and see them. I just know if a movie is going to worth my time, money isn't an issue I get free tickets.

I actually enjoy trailers, because they're for the most part a mere taste of something grander.
