AOL Issues

Okay, maybe you can lay a little enlightenment on me with some AOL issues.
If some fucktard replies to this with "don't use AOL" or something similar, things will not go well.
1. My sister's computer recently stopped connecting properly with AOL 8.0. It will go all the way to Step 7 "Checking Password" and just stop. Sometimes it'll go back to Step 5 "Talking to network". Un/res had absolutely zero effect on it. I think it's a spyware/virus/windows rot problem. One time I got an error with waol.exe involving a file called vbscript.dll and another dll I can't recall the name of.
2. To try and see what was wrong, I installed AOL 4.0. Installed and connected, working fine. Downloaded Spybot and found that I couldn't search for updates. Turns out I can't connect to the internet with any other program except for AOL 4.0 and I can't figure out how to fix it.
Reinstalling the OS is a last resort measure right now. Help is appreciated, but smartass comments will not endear you to me.

Sounds like standard issue AOL crap. While I was forced to use dialup I had the same problem. Try logging on with a different computer, changing your password and then try the orginal. Worked for me.
It's just a fuckup with AOL itself, it's even worse if you have a stored password (a bad idea anyways) as my sister proved the hard way..

Well, regarding AOL, it's the most serious piece of advice I can give.
After AOL 6, I gave up on it, and now are virtually problem-free...

Un/res?
Try looking at AOL's connection settings. They can go completely screwy sometimes for no reason at all.
The last time I used AOL was at version 5.0, but knowing them they haven't changed a thing (aside from the graphics) since then.

I'm stuck with dial-up, and I have my share of problems, but nothing as severe as THAT. I wish I could help.

They actually made some real improvement with 6.0 and 7.0 regarding reliability. 8.0 seems to have adopted a lot of new features and as a result has a lot of reliability problems.

That's funny, I'm currently having some issues with AIM, as it will let me log on and see people on my buddy list, but I can't talk to them and get no messages from them. How fun is THAT?!!!
Erg. Guess I'll just have to communicate the old-fashioned way... [hick] Now, where da hell did my horse get to? [/hick]

AOL 8.0 is loaded with worthless features and spyware. If AOL is the only option, go back to AOL 7.0, which tends to be much more stable (at least in my experience,) while maintaining many of the features found in 8.0.

She has 7.0 on her machine. Same problem.

Get Trillian.
I don't like it, though. It works just about as often as AIM and I don't get to have cute away messages and a nifty profile with a poem about stalking in it on Trillian.
Oh, and hi to you and Dalton. I saw your messages, it just wouldn't let me respond. And hi to Durandal from before, when he tried to say hi and I couldn't answer.

You can have cute away messages, but you have to add them first.

A serious reply:
This problem cropped up sometimes when I was still on dialup. The best answer I can give you is it's linked, somehow, to the number being dialed. One of the lines I used stalled on Checking Password, the other stalled(IIRC) on getting network attention. You may have luck if you try another access number.

Nitram: I figured this was the problem, but it occurred with several numbers. However, it DIDN'T occur when I used the older version to sign on...same machine, same number IIRC.
I'm gonna go try that out right now.

Trillian works all the time, but it depends on the status of the program that you're using. Also make sure you use Trillian .74 with Patch D or Pro 1.0 with Patch C, or you'll have major connectivity issues (AOL constantly tries to block 3rd party program access to the AIM network because they suck dicks).

Yes, I figured, hence my other messages! Have you tried reinstalling AIM?
