WARNING!!

There's a lightning storm here right now. So if there's an interruption in the board, you'll know the electrical power flickered at my place
PS. I have a UPS on my server but not on the DSL modem and router, which are in a different room. Not that it would make a difference in an extended power outage anyway.

Ah, nothing like a good ol' ion storm to lighten up a dull day.
If you get frazzled by a bolt sent by a god that doesn't exist, can I have your porn collection?

Ah, the glory of power outages. And the...."unique" emotion you feel when something you've been working on for over an hour suddenly disappears in an instant....

A word from the wise, even disconnecting cables from the main power socket isn't enough, if it's a strong enough bolt and the cable is close enough it
will jump, provided it hasn't already got onto another line and fried something else.

Aren't those what lightning rods are for?
Also, the power outages over here are usually never from lightning strikes (we don't have much, or any for that matter).
There was, though, one time when some guys in a car plowed into a transformer and blew it up. They were unharmed (except for one guy who was blind for about 20 minutes) but the whole town suffered a pretty extended power outage.

Lighting rods are not a sure thing, and the ones on most houses will only limit the damage, they won't stop it completely. The real probules is most houses only have a single rod, in reality you need more like three or four of them to cover the whole roof, and if you have a chimney you need one in every corner of it.
