Should I go for double (dorm with a roommate) or single?

It depends. I actually had a pretty cool roommate this year, so it wasn't all bad. If this is your first year in college then yeah, I'd say go for it. If not, or if you're really going to be studying your ass off because of your major, then go with a single.

I'm going to be majoring in Computer Science, and it's been said all around that the first year is the hardest, at least in my college.

Go for a single. A roommate might be cool, but you risk the chance of winding up with a pain in the ass.

Is money an issue? Are'nt singles more expensive? If money is not an issue Id think about a single, since you are still going to make friends in the dorm anyway.

Not sure about one being expensive over the other, but the benefit from doubles would be the experience of living with another person, but then again I might be better off in a single room.

I'm not a victim of loneliness either, so yeah, I guess single would be the best.

Though one advantage of having a roomate would be that you have someone to do the chores for you on certain days

If you are not prone to being lonely, like I was, then Id skip a roommate. As an adult , Im not that lonely, so living alone in my own place is fine. But you will have lots of friends to make in a dorm even if you are alone in your room.

I lived at home during college so I missed out on the dorm stuff. Kinda wish I hadnt.

If it's your first year at college, I would get a double. It may not always be the most comfortable, but you'll get the experience of having a roommate and get that whole dorm experience.

A single is only good if you want your space and don't want the hassle associated with living with someone.

Unless your roomate is someone you know and get along with , go for the single, random roomies in general suck complete ass and will add greatly to your overall stress level for your first year.

If you can afford it, take the single. Dorms can be pretty social places anyway, especially if you've got an RA who works at getting people to know each other. Being able to have all the privacy you want just by closing the door is priceless. Having a good roomate vastly improves the college experience, but IMO, having a bad roomate can worsen it to a far greater degree, so best not to take chances if you're in a major where you need lots of study time. And if the loneliness does get to you, you can always room with a friend next year.

Put it this way - if you have a roommate, then you're never going to be FAFed.
If you have a roommate, there is a distinct possiblity he might not care you're there, and bring a FAFer back to the room.

Do you really really want to like up all night listening to that?

single single single. There's always the kitchen if you want to be sociable.

the great opportunity to watch the colony of slime molds on the pizza under his bed grow to intelligence

I had a great experience with the dorms. That is cool that you have the choice of single or double. At my university it was double (or triple in some cases).

I only stayed in the dorms the first two years of my undergraduate time. My roommate and I moved with my partner and another friend to an apartment, and that is were we still reside. Yes, two gay guys, two str8 guys. It worked out fine. Unfortunately, my str8 roommate is getting married at the end of this month and moving on.

Having a roommate isn't for everybody, but it worked out great for me.

Right, anecdote time -

One friend ended up with an evil bitch indie girl who she had nothing in common with, who used to throw her stuff across the room, and bring home skanky men to shag.

Another friend ended up with a philosophy student who never seemd to do any work, succeeding only in distracting the poor guy, who also wans't able to spend quality time wiht his fiancee.

I guess living in the dorms was ok. I'm in an apartment now and I do kind of miss the social aspect. On the other hand, Residence Life sucks here and it screws (in a bad way) people like there's no tomorrow. Happened to me and several of my friends. My advice is talk to someone who goes where you're going and see how they feel.

It depends. In my case I, along with every other student at my university recieved some rather comprehensive questionnaires to fill out regarding our study preferences, hours, personality types, roommate preferences, and many many other things. The forms were then used to pair off roommates, floors, and sections of dorms to keep everyone happy, and it succeeded in an overwhelming majority of cases. If your college is giving out detailed questionaires to be submitted with your residence application, I'd say it's a pretty safe bet to live in a double room with your handpicked roommate.

If on the other hand the questionnaires look sketchy or are absent altogether, it would be better to go for a single room as it's an obvious sign that they're just pairing you up at random which greatly increases the chances of getting a sucky roommate.

Final note, Co-ed Dorms Rule!! Get into one if at all possible.

It depends on what type of person you are. It seems some people don't understand the concept of compromise, which enabled me to go through 6 years of roommates without incident. I know lots of friends however that just could not live with someone.

Roommates are an easy way to meet new people. Its great if you're in engineering and your roommate is in some girl-heavy program. The best was my roommate from Japan, as a girl, she put pot-pouri in the bathroom, its smelled like flowers…. flowers I tell ya! I think I’ll have to get married just to get the flowers back.
