I went out and got me an mp3 player! :) Turns out that Best Buy got in some more Sony players and I found one with a 80 hour battery life, with a remote control...and it came with the car kit! All for $79.95! (Walkman D-NE51CK) It also came with software where I could rip songs and encode them either as mp3s, "Atrac", "Atrac2", or "Atrac3". (whatever the hell those last three are. :p) I was going to nab the Panasonic player when I happened to see this thing. The only drawback is that it came with some really shitty quality headphones, but thats no big deal since I'll use my Koss earbuds anyhow.

linky

edit: Link updated. Sony updated their website, so I updated the link to point to the appropriate product.

Hey man, don't me knockin' Sony. I've still got the very first Discman they released ages ago. The thing has been dropped atleast half a dozen times, and the only thing to show for it is that it lost two of the three ball-bearings in the disk holder. (which causes it to skip randomly on the last couple tracks on any CD) They may be high priced, but they're fucking durable as hell! I swear, the things are part Timex!

I have a similar story, my Sony Discman is about 2 years old, has been impacted more times than I can remember, and still functions perfectly.

Alright, I decided to do a little benchmarking on the skip protection. I've done everything I can think of just short of dropping it on a slab of concrete. So far the skip protection has lived upto its claim! Even when playing a 320kbps mp3!
