AOL question...

Post by Brother-Captain Gaius »

How would you get around the moronic site blocks with parental controls enabled, without actually knowing the password? Someone I know needs access to some perfectly fine websites only a fundie or similar nutcase would find offensive.

AOL's site blocks are pretty effective. Your friend could try going around it by not using AOL to surf the web (that is, by launching IE or other external browsers.) Though that usually doesn't work either.

I just experimented by setting my own status to child. Goddamn AOL blocked me from using IE at all. If it's possible to prevent anything but AOL from accessing the web, it's probably done it.

Install keylogger, steal password when say, parent logs in. Assumming that a site to download it from isn't blocked. If it is, I suppose someone could email a keylogging program to you.

Wonder if it blocks alternative browsers?

Possible. I haven't bothered getting any so I can't be sure. If there are any people here who use AOL for internet access but have other browsers besides it and IE, I'd be glad to hear how it works for you.

Funny, I thought that was the defination of day time television....
Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.

Thanks for the help. Problem with the keylogger idea is that all the good ones I looked at notify the user that the program is running. But I'll see what I can work out.

Okay, I set my self to child and then tried to go to a porn site. AOL's browser blocked it but I had no problem getting there by using Netscape over the top of it. :D

As AOL slowly drifts to using more of Netscape in it's browser I'm sure they'll eventually deal with this loop hole but right now it's still there on AOL 8.0.

Also of note, AOL's browser also locks into security and other settings you set in IE or in the Windows control panel. A non IE based browser also gets around those. :D

Well, that's because AOL's browser is Internet Explorer :P

In the meantime, I'd suggest using either Opera or Mozilla 1.2.1.

Yeah, but what do you do when you've got a friend whose parents did activate it?

http://www.soft-central.net/keylog.php- get v1 at the bottom, V2 is a bit too obvious. Unzip in a hidden folder somewhere.

version 2 of SC-Keylog is more designed for sneaking onto remote computers.
