Did I misunderstand the line about flame warriors and the smack down? If so, please tell me. I don't wish to offend, but I thought that was the set up. If not, I'm happy to walk away from this thread.

Flamewarriors came from the fact that SDnet has been a "hotspot" for sci-fi debates, and quite often we have to deal with trolls and such people. Hence, we've fought through much flamage, hence we are flamewarriors. Flame-retardant suits are standard issue.

It doesn't mean we insert flames into every post we make.

EDIT: And smackdown is meant in a friendly way.

The smackdown for n00bs is figurative, mostly. Unless you're a troll, in which case you'll be shot down into the pit of flames. Standard hazing ritual is the poke, which I don't do.

Well, it doesn't seem to be general practice to beat people up just for joining, but if you are an ass/don't follow rules/have the debating skills of a pile of shit, but try to pretend you know what you're talking about anyway, the smack down comes very quick... Until then,

Ouch, but I'm getting the idea I'm not supposed to intentionally be flamed, so I'll try my best to avoid that cat-o-nine. Since this is the anyting goes section, I'll keep away from the sci fi for now, but I expect that is where people really mix it up. This is just an introductory thread. I'm looking for tips on the how the board works -- culture, norms, etc. I've looked at some of the faqs and announcements, but I want the informal intro.

I'm not embarassed. I did lurk for a while, but I found things a bit confusing regarding etiquette, so I thought I'd do best to wade in. I'm ready for any learning you have to dispense.
