1) What makes you think the noob would care about an existing thread?

2) Thirty posts per noob consisting solely of *POKE* is clearly futile.

3) I closed the other thread not only because of the pokes but also because people were starting to flame a possible, but not yet, troll.

If there were a way for posts counts not to increase in the thread when posted in I suppose it would be fine.

But AFAIK, no thread possess that capability. Anyways the, "Hi, N00b here" threads are fine. Guy says hi, gets poked, thread locked, move along.

Lots of places have a "Introduce Yourself" thread.

Just putting in my 2 cents - its rather distressing to have your first posts locked....

Oh well.

They're still pointless. I suppose it would be more interesting if you had an unusual life history and you wanted to share, but just saying "Hello, I'm new here" is not much of a discussion topic.

Yeah, sorry about getting that started. I was just trying to bring the interesting coincidence to attention and didn't mean for it to spiral into the 'Shoot first, ask questions later' thing it devolved into.

Oh, he's from TK. But that doesn't make him a troll. If he's interested in debating any subject of the site instead of mindless trolling or engaging in personal vendetta's, he's a normal member as far as I'm concerned.

Social Interaction, in and of itself, it meaningless and pointless. Its only value is to allow people to feel "connected" to the other members of the board. Reading it would allow members to see "Hey, I thought I was the only left-handed ex-monk!"

Without the data, how can you judge whether or not someone's life is interesting?

That's why the "Hi" threads that usually don't get locked are the ones where the thread creator puts some effort into presenting himself right at the beggining. That's usually not the case, though.

Well, without the "Introduce yourself" title, was left with the standard "Hi! I'm new here." routine.

Just a suggestion.

Or you could just have blended into the forum by posting in a few already active threads. That's the best way to know new people, either in a forum or in the real life.

But it's not a bad idea. I'll think about it.

You? A newbie? You've been here several months and have 500 posts, what do you think you are?

3 months and 471.

Can't tell if I lose my newbie status until after I get Jedi Knight.

I'll tell you up front - I found this board from TK. That board has its personality, this one has its own.

I like the idea of debate, not just flames, but I was a little distressed to find that if someone didn't like my opinion on dating, they could flame me at will. But hey, I'm the noob and I gotta prove myself over time.

They can flame you at will, but if they're supposed to make points while doing it, otherwise it eventually goes to the Hall of Shame. Completely pointless flames aren't allowed; you're always supposed to make some kind of point.

You lose it when people accept and remember you. That’s already happened.

So by that standard, I expect that this post will find its way to the hall of shame?

While I made suggestions about how to handle the dating situation, this response was just an idle threat. I was within topic and basing it on my experiences in college.

Unless a threat is considered making a point ...

Actually, he pointed out that in his own personal situation, he is perfectly happy without following your two ridiculous rules. There WAS a point in that message, in between the flames. As I said, when you degenerate to the point that you just flame for the sake of flaming, it's usually HoS time.
