A little example of why we often run into trouble here
MSN Conversation wrote:Caoimhin: *smiles* I never debate unless I know I'm right....
*********: lol
you're one of those!
Caoimhin: *laughs* Yes, I dont get into it unless I know what I'm talking about.
*********: well yeah, you'd have to know what you're talking about.
but a good debator will be able to make others believe his points even if he himself disagrees with them
*********: i had to do that with something in philosophy, and everyone was nodding along with me, and in my head, i was like, "losers! get a brain!!!"
Caoimhin: That's the art of bullshitting....
********* : yes.
********* : debating. bullshitting.
********* : same old stuff
********* : lol
Caoimhin: I dont consider it real debating if I'm bullshitting....
********* : well.
********* : that's a debate; to be able to convince others that what you're saying is 'right'.
while another person tries to prove you wrong and himself right. at least, that's how the debates i partook in always took place.
we were given a topic and assigned a side... and given what, 10 minutes to arrange our discussion
********* : yadiyada
Caoimhin: And if you lie or employ deciet? Logical fallacies? Outright bullshit? is that still debating?
********* : well no.
********* : you're suppose to twist around facts so that they're still facts, but so that they prove to be in your benefit
Caoimhin: Ah, that's employing logical fallacies and deciet then.....
********* : maybe not so much deceit, but logical fallacies, yes.
********* : *shrug*
THIS is why i hate debating!
:@
Caoimhin: Hence why I dont consider it real....where I debate they will call you on warping the facts.
********* : you, however, i imagine, would be a very frustrating person to debate with.
********* : true enough.

Actually, what he's saying is more or less right. The point of an actual debate is to win/convince the audience, not to be right - that is, in real-life circles (ask Kynes).

Here, bullshit can be called out because it's easier to find.

I know....debating and politics ride hand in hand....where its not what evidence you have....its how you can make it sound cool.
Aside from which I thought it was rather amusing.
