Is a 745x505 too big to be on the front door to a website?

If someone uses a slow-ass modem, then I suppose so. If it is about 2/3 that size, it should be okay.

You should try to make sure it looks OK at 800x600 even with a sidebar open. Generally, 640 is considered a good width for website graphics. And of course, you want to keep the bandwidth down, but that's what JPEG is for.
