Egotistical Newbies

Why do some newbies expect us to go apeshit when they annouce their arrival here? Do they really expect us to say things like, "jumping jebus on a pogo stick, we've been waiting for a member like you" ?
I suppose it has something to do with age and maturity level and the fact that we're on the internet. Would you walk into a neighborhood bar of regulars and start fights when people ignored your grand entrance? No, you'd grab a beverage, listen in on some conversations, maybe shoot some pool, and get to know the crowd and the scene.
To switch analogies, the new dog always gets their butt sniffed and is challeneged by the alphas. If you can't wait to learn the lay of land, you either stand up and prove yourself, or run off with your tail between your legs.
Why do some people expect things to be different here?
Edit: don't get me wrong, new members are important in keeping this board relevant, and except for the folks that signed on in July 2002, we were all newbies here once.

Maybe they expect somehow that annoucing their presence will make them look unique?
Who knows...but some of the most recent have gotten some oddball reactions out of flaming and locking.

Some are morons, some a morons who where well known somewhere else we've never heard of, and some are smart and just blend in, maybe escaping a poking hail in the process.

Some newbies come here because they see a discussion thread and they want to say something about the topic. Those are the good ones.
Others come here because they have some kind of agenda; the worst ones are out to "prove" something about SD.Net, so they'll make a few pointless spam posts in search of a reaction and then disappear back to point of origin to tell all of their little friends that "Yup, those guys at SD.Net are assholes. All I did was introduce myself, and they locked the thread. I guess they're afraid of outsiders".

Some of them may just be doing what they think is polite and introducing themselves.

Fair enough, but if they react in a hostile fashion when the thread is locked for being spam, they're either pushy assholes by nature or they're out to "prove" something. It's not as if people lock the thread by saying "fuck off newbie"; they lock the thread after it gets turned into a pointless but harmless poke-fest.

You forget the worst kind: the sycophants. The puerile dweebs who think that the key to acceptance is to do everything the regulars do, but louder and longer. I dedicate my sig to them.

I have always found introduction threads rather pointless, although I do try to be welcoming when I see one. Truly, you can never be certain whether that thread may be one of the first the person has ever done. I try to default to kindness wherever possible. It really is much nicer that way.

All right, no introducion, go right into the action.
I don't relly know, what people think, when they have to shout they they were here now. Perhaps the feeling, not to be recogisend enough or they think they were something better.....

Having an avatar helps people to remember you. And being a smod. If someone asked me that, I'd see him HOSed

Just choose an image that obeys the required size parameters and upload it in the profile menu.

The best way to introduce yourself on a message board such as this... is not to. Simply hop into the discussions. It's worked for me on several different boards.

Yepp, it exactly what I have done, and it already paid off.
