I was surprised how well most of the covers on "The Man Comes Around" worked. His cover of Personal Jesus took me a couple of listens, but it quickly grew on me.

Have you listened to anything from the other America cover albums JC did (The Man Comes Around being the fourth in the series, AFAICT)? I haven't had a chance to pick them up yet.

I read about a Johnny Cash tribute album with Henry Rollins singing "Lonesome, On'ry, and Mean."

I've seen it been done the other way 'round. For example, the black/death metal band Finntroll once did a metal cover of a swedish folk song called "Vargtimmen." Of course, Finntroll's particular brand of metal is already influenced by folk music and Finnish polka, so you couldn't hear much of a difference anyway.
