I've thought about learning some vietnamese, any links?

Good luck. Vietnamese is a tonal language with six distinct tones that are subtly different. It is unlikely that you'll be able to learn it online.
As for alphabet, it's a modified Roman alphabet with a large number of accent marks.

You don`t need to learn Vietnamese they learn really fast to speak english and french,in 1980 i met a Vietnamese guy and he told us they learn french in school there,so if one of them try to make you believe he don`t understand you,when you talk in english or french do not believe him.

English is rapidly supplanting French is schools in Vietnam.

Do you have Vietnamese friends? Tonal languages are nearly impossible to learn unless you grow up in or around the culture.
