I think because most of us (95%) who post on the Internet are guys, and we wish to receive news that females have indeed been sighted on The Internet.
And of course, most of us are probably single, so we are looking for girls with the same interest. For... social business...
Cheers,
Meghel

On the tech oriented groups and boards, sure, but certainly not on the entire Internet. It's just that the guys tend to aggrigate towards 'guy stuff' and the gals aggrigate towards 'gal stuff.' While women aren't all that common on scifi boards (if you've seen the kind of crap that goes on when one does trop in to somewhere like SB, you'd know why), but I wouldn't expect to see all that many men on a sewing listserv either. The gender balance on the entire net isn't 50/50 yet but it's definitely getting there.

David, this is a sci-fi discussion board. This sort of thing is exclusive to the Union of Sad Lonely Males. The probability of a young lady turning up here is almost as great as the probability of the Emperor suddenly deciding to wear pink robes and decreeing that the entire galaxy must get in touch with its' inner child.
I'm sure there are many guys here who are married or in stable relationships. I just don't think that this is the sort of place many women of any kind would come.

We all wish we had friends.
On another note, not all people who surf the Internet are men that won't get laid, even if we are all like that.

And frankly I'm okay with the SW vs ST being a guy thing to talk about, because if George and whoever is in charge of whatever Star Trek franchise start having naked male cabaret in the background in a duelling attempt to garner the young female viewership, I swear, I'll forego watching anything and become Amish. ("That's it young man, you're Amish! Do you hear me? Amish! Now go to your room and don't come down until you've made some soap and raised a barn!" - with apologies to whomever)

Well, it is tough to be a Sci-Fi Chick. Whenever there's a poll to choose the sexiest character in Sci-Fi, Han Solo, Picard, Harry Kim et al never show up, and you have to choose between Amidala and T'Pol, neither of whom are particularly male.

Well, there is Mon Mothra but I don't think she'll make it on a li... holy shit. Did you say you were a chick?

Yes. Everyone else seems to think so and I agree with them.

I suppose I could get Rebecca to post here just to raise the "chick count" (she does like Star Wars, although not as much as I do), but she's not big on the Internet discussion-group phenomenon. She doesn't even like sitting in front of a computer for long periods of time (unlike us, obviously).
It goes without saying that she doesn't like the argumentative style of "vs" debates or the phallic uber-hardware obsession common to sci-fi geeks.
