Scenario: The US and China go to war. Each nation's objective is to capture the other's capital. No allies will enter the fight and no WMD will be used. The war will continue until there is a winner, even if it takes fifty years.

What happens?

Does the nation have to be able to hold the capital for a significant length of time? I'm assuming that is a requirement.

The US blockades China, starving it of oil and food and slowly bombs it into submission. For a while the US will have economy problems but there's really nothing China makes that another company cannot and the world and especially south East Asia has a big surpluses in manufacturing capability. Given 5-10 year, the US could build up the troops and supplies it needs to take and hold Beijing. The Chinese meanwhile will rapidly lose there already limited ability to produce high technology weapons but they could build up some pretty massive fortifications. But those are unlikely to work. Though in the end Beijing is going to be something like Grozny. They will also lose most of there power plants and other industry along with strategic transport. China relies heavily on railways and they have several major rivers. Dropping the bridge along them would greatly fuck them over.

In the end it’s a US victory. China doesn’t have a chance since they lack the military power they need to strike at US infrastructure by any but terrorist means. US technology, industry and money can't be matched in the long run.

The US wins this one. Even if China has a modernized armed forces, the US has the allies to contain China. South Korea, Japan, and perhaps Taiwan, Vietnam (probably hates the Chinese more than the Americans) and the Philippines can act as a buffer against Chinese incursions.

US fighting doctrine is the finest in the world and is more battle-tested than the PLA. It won't take fifty years.

Thread says no allies, which hurts the US since its land based fighters wont be of use for the initial part of the war. However once Chinese airpower can be knocked back, it will take a while to destroy all those J-6's and J-7's thing become easier. China has a couple Islands in the South China Sea that could be seized as a forward base, and its coast as countless islands as well though most would be at risk from Chinese troops on the mainland. Course theres nothing like an MLRS battalion to beat back a mass of infantry and shitty tanks.

Quantity vs. Quality? I don't know, but China's refusal to posture has got to say something abou their military force. I mean, they're next to KIM JONG for Chrissakes!

China is a very big fish in a small pond. I don't think they'll be capable of challenging the US for 10-20 years at least.

Yeah, I sorta figured China's naval inferiority pretty much ruled out any chance of actually winning. It's just a matter of how long they can hold out.
