Miyazaki is completely mad.

I have come to the conclusion that Hayao Miyazaki has crossed that fine line between genius and complete batshit insanity. My proof so far:
1. Spirited Away: a GIANT FUCKING BABY. I am not kidding when I say this monstrous child is at least eight feet tall and weighs five hundred pounds.
2. My Neighbor Totoro: The Catbus. A FUCKING CATBUS. It used its eyes for headlamps, walked on ten legs and travelled across power lines.
Anyone else?

I don't know. Crazy people tend to think up boring stuff. Youreally have to be a genius to think up stuff that sane people think is crazy.
Take the concept of zombie monkey pirates, for example. Such an insane combination of ideas, and yet so brilliant.

Zombie monkey pirates?
Are they weirder than the Mononoke forest rattle spirit guys?

I agree. Do you have a problem with this? I, for one, am a fan of insanity.

I prefer Cuckoo Codpiece Zulu Warriors. Rolls off the tongue a little better.

Um, those are Kodamas, which Miyazaki didn't create but rather come from Japanese mythology.
An no, I don't think he is insane. A little eccentric and more than a little critical of himself, but not insane. Both things you listed weren't all that unusual in the context of the world they were in.

You mean like this?
But anyway, zombie monkey pairates was just a quickly thought-up image I just threw out. And that's all Miyazaki's stuff is: just odd images. Unless you're a sheletered little boy or something, they shouldn't be considered as crazy.

Hey man, I'll still consider them crazy.
But I'm not saying that crazy=bad.
Crazy=crazy

Well then, stop freaking out over them. They're odd, but they're not a big deal. The giant baby was supposed to be huge, considering the visual irony and how it fit in with the story. Look for crazy somewhere else, like in old NES games.

The Giant Baby was funky...the latern on the other hand was my okay...sure.

*Sigh* If you are going to go after crazy Anime directors, why go after Mr. Miyazaki and skip over the fine folk at GAINAX that gave us FLCL? Or the people who made Alien 9 or Kodocha?

Yes and it makes sense in the context of the world.

Jesus Christ, Uts and Yogi, are you actually taking me seriously?
I have seen an episode of FLCL. It's just as crazy, if not more so.

I assumed it'd be safer to assume you were serriously shocked and confused about Miyazaki's work, than to say something like "bah, Dalton's just squawking for attention" and get you pissed.
Speaking of pissed, anyone know what happened to my "quick question about bean-bags" thread? I don't think people were done adding their thoughts to it.

It's generally difficult to get me pissed in matters such as this.

Wouldn't be surprised if it got dumped

Ok then.
"Dalton's an attention-whore, Dalton's an attention-whore!!"
Wouldn't be surprised if it got dumped

'Dumped'? As in no lock, no warning post or PM, just deleted off the board? It wasn't that bad, I just asked what color bean-bag chair people would preferred to be turned into.

I remember that thread being locked, but now it seems to have dissappeared.

When I saw that, the only way I could keep my mind from frying was to shut off all parts of my brain that wanted to think LOGICALLY. After that, I was good to go, and it nearly made sense! Plus, there were some great instruments in there. Hell, anything with a Rickenbacker bass, Gibson Flying V, and an SG can't be THAT bad!
As for some of the odd things in Miyazaki's work, well, I can't speak for Totoro (as I still have yet to see it), but I can speak for Spirited Away. As soon as Chihiro and parents stepped into that area, it turned more or less into a much more surreal world. Because of the fact that there are fewer humans or "normal" world beings, beings which might appear as abstract or bizzare in our world become the norm in the world Miyazaki created. This allows for other devices to be used within the plot of the story that wouldn't be easily availible otherwise.
