I am going hiking in Canada tomorow and I just learned that Bear Spray is illegal. Sure you can own a firearm in Canada, but having Bear Spray is a crime it seems. I guess your expected to fend off an agressive bear inside a National Park with harsh language. At least in the US you can carry a freaking can of bear spray to keep the buggers off of you. I'd take my pistol up into Canada if that weren't illegal too since apparently foreigners can't be trusted with an unregistered gun when Canada can't even keep track of half of their own weapons under their registration system.

Yeah, they're pretty damn silly up there. But we've got a lot of nonsensical laws here too, so there's not much room to complain.

The Canadian registration system is too busy calculating out its 44,000% over budget expenses to handle anything related to firearms at this time.

I'm not sure where you got that particular piece of information. You can only bring pepper spray into the country if it is specifically labelled as being used for bears only. It's a controlled substance, not an illegal one.

You can buy bear spray here in Canada. You just can't use it on people, that's all.

I don't know why so many Americans feel compelled to spread misinformation about Canadian rules. This one is nothing compared to the bullshit which is liberally spread about our health care system, but it's irksome nonetheless.

My dad can't have a pistol either. But he can have a rifle, a SMG, a carbine, even a fucking GPMG if he wanted one!

In NZ you can have all kinds of rifles/MG's so long as you have the right licence and appropriate storage for them, but pisols are a interesting category.
Here to own a pistol you must activly compete in shooting competions, about 5 times a year or your pistol licence gets revoked. This is not true of other categories of firearm.

That part makes sense. The part that doesn't is that if I got a lisence, I could own an M16-K, a G-11, shit, even an M-134 and the government wouldn't give a shit. But an M-9, no...

Bears are pretty much harmless anyway, right? They're not really agressive towards humans, IIRC.

Being able to own a rifle and not a pistol makes sense, specially since concealing a pistol is much easier. But the SMG part is kinda stupid, these are nearly as small as pistols... well, some are. OTOH none that I know fit in your pocket, but most pistols do.

It's part right. Bears could be dangerous especially if it is a mother with young or it doesn't fear humans because they associated humans as a source of food.

There was a young couple out in the woods around here a while ago that saw a bear approaching their camp, so they idiotically grabbed their food and dragged it inside their tent. Naturally, the bear continued to approach their tent, so they broke and ran for it.

Let's just say that the faster runner of the two survived.
