Homer is such a goof ball that I tend to take your post as if they were coming from Homer. 
I think something similar was mentioned about the person with the Simpson's Comic Store Guy as an avatar.
Basically I felt that to me your post came across as more serious with your old avatar. Plus it was cool while Homer of Borg is funny.
Homer has definately fit with some of the humorous polls you've had going though.
