It looks pretty good, I like the idea of having the DCR hard drive instead of tapes, which then you could put on DVD's. And the lifetime membership fee looks good, if you plan to have it for a while you could just pay that and never pay anything again!

Nah, Comcast offer there version for cheaper.

If I get it...it'll allow my minimal TV to go up by maybe a couple hours....maybe.

Though my friend Dave does have one(not TiVO)...it's nice, in that it does allow everything TiVO does(except a bell or whistle)and no extra box needed, if you have Digital cable.

My beloved parents, while not actually havign TiVO, have the panasonic DVD recorder that also has a hard drive.

It is highyl useful:
1. when you're recordign something simply because you'll miss it, you can rewrite it very easily, saving on video tape.
2. if you want to keep something (like a series you really like), you can save it until you have a collection that'll fill the DVDs before you make a DVDR with a theme.
3. When making DVDs, you can edit out ad breaks.
4. You can watch and record at the same time - e.g. if you're not ready to watch the program bang on 9, you can record it, but start watching it before it finishes. You can also start recording in order to pause live TV if interupted.

So if you can afford it, I recommend it over a VCR.

I have a TiVo. Its the Hughes version with the built in Directv decoder. I love it. Even with dual channel, its still cheaper than Comcast's service. Plus, I only have to pay DTV $4.99 more a month, as opposed to having another $10 to $15 bill each month for other TiVo systems that don't have the built in satellite decoder. Also, the Hughes TiVo runs on Linux.

Bleh, I'll never submit to TiVo. It will destroy all of television (not that that's neccesarily a bad thing, given the state of TV in this day and age)! No one seeing commercials means no funding for all our favorite shows; TV will go out of business because of TiVo. It's evil I tell you, eeeevvviiilll!

I have a PVR. I love the thing. I can record, re-wind, and pause live-TV. If I'm trying to take care of something else, and I miss a line of dialogue, I just go back thirty seconds and watch it again. The thing is made for football, and it's the only way to watch MI-5 (which is an absolutely terrific show, BTW).

Mine has 100 hours worth of recording time on it, but my boss's system only gets about 50, so I'm not sure what's going on there. Seriously, though, it's well worth the nominal fee, especially for football fans.

decoder, as is descrambler? Gives you all the channels, aren't those illegal?

Descramblers are not neccessarily illegal. If you bought one from some place online so that you didn't have to pay for premium channels, then yes, you're breaking the law. If you're renting one from your cable provider than no, it's not illegal.

Most satellite providers encrypt their signal, IIRC, using a public key stored on a smartcard. You need a set-top box to decode the satellite signal and decrypt it.

What phongn said. Each Directv system (and I think digital cable and Dish Network) receiver has a decoder built into. That's what the little memory card in each receiver is for - once you've set up your service, it lets you watch what you've paid for.

I though all TiVos ran on linux?
