Bishops are instructed to pursue these cases "in the most secretive way...restrained by a perpetual silence...and everyone {including the alleged victim) ...is to observe the strictest secret, which is commonly regarded as a secret of the Holy Office...under the penalty of excommunication."
"Keep your mouth shut or we'll execute you" Bastards.

I wonder what my mom will say to this after thinking it's just a local thing.

Do the Orthodox churches have these problems? The document was addressed even to them.

Let the clergy marry and this *might* go away or go on the decrease...

Still, this is plain *wrong*

Er..."to excommunicate" means "to kick out of the church." It is not a synonym for "to execute."

Catholic hypocrisy knows no bounds. After claiming that their huge organization was "slow to react" to decades of child sex abuse in their own ranks, they turned around and reacted with startling speed and surprising aggressiveness when Canada legalized gay marriages. The message came right from the Pope and was quickly being blasted from pulpits across the country within weeks, with massive publicity campaigns to boot.

"Slow to react", eh? Fucking bastards. They can react pretty fucking fast when they want to.

Hehe. The document in the article dates from 1962, looks like they were REALLY on the ball with this one!

I was quite happy that I'd finally dropped out of the church when I heard about this. I was not surprised at all.

What, you got excommunicated? You're a Catholic from the moment Dad came to the end of your life, in the eyes of the Church.

Excommunication is when you get kicked out. I dropped out.

How nice. They can shove it up their asses for all I care.

I would assume that when a directive comes from the top down, as in the case of the Canadian homosexuality ruling, there would be much less dilly-dallying and dead-ends in the gigantic Roman Catholic bureaucracy. The sex abuse business, on the other hand, was decentralized and occured primarily at the lowest levels of the Catholic hierarchy.

Not trying to defend the child molestors, just trying to understand this apparent contradiction.

Whats the religious world coming to?

Muslim clerics want to kill me and the Christian clergy want to fuck me up the ass without the courtesy of a reach-around.

Hmmm, suddenly converting to Buddism, Hinduism, or Aetheism seems like a good idea.
