Controversial win at Beer Can Regatta


Controversy surrounds the winner of this year's Battle of Mindil at the annual Darwin Beer Can Regatta.

The winning team was Mighty Quick Beer Sinkers, with their boat Red Rosie, which was shaped as an aeroplane and made from more than 3,000 cans.

Team member Jeremy Bree says the team was happy with the boat's performance and the $500 they won for taking line honours.

But he says there was an official protest lodged against them.

"We won $500 for the best boat [and $500 for the win] but under protest, we've had to pay a slight fine for the Battle of Mindil," he said.

"Apparently we forgot to put on some lifejackets so we've paid a fine of $175, so the rest of that is our winnings."

You really have to be brave to be in a fucking beer can regatta on a river or the sea anywhere NEAR Darwin...

I've been to the Beer Can Regatta, it's a GREAT day out, except for the immensely hot NT sun.
