John Mayer = Yay

Just wanted to post this, because my mind had been soiled by people who were unimpressed with the boy, that John Mayer is INCREDIBLE in concert. I mean, he's incredible anyway, but I saw him Friday night at the Nissan Pavilion in Virginia and he put on a FANTASTIC show.

Let me just run down a quick list of the fantastico things he did:

1) Played some brilliant blues guitar solos that were so amazing my mouth was literally hanging open at one point in the concert. And I'm a professionally trained musician, so that's hard to do.

2) He played about five new songs of his, all of which I enjoyed greatly.

3) He played two of my three most favourite songs by him, one of which (3x5) had the most gorgeous piano intro to it. (And for all you music theory dorks out there, the piano intro was--I think--alternating between 5/8 and 7/8 and then the drumset put a light rock beat in 4/4 over that, and then the bass and backup guitar came in, and they only lined up with the piano every once in a while and it was SOOOOO COOOOOOOOOL--that is so fucking hard to do and it sounded unbelievable!!)

4) Some girlies in the front were waving to him, and one of them had a disposable camera in her hand. He leaned over, took the camera from her, took some pictures of the audience for her from his point of view, and then held the camera at an arm's length out and took a couple pictures of himself while he was in the middle of singing one of the songs. Then he handed her the camera back.

5) He made jokes in the middle of some of his songs, including a really funny impersonation of Justin Timberlake's latest song.

6) His music just plain kicked ass. He sounds great live, talked a little bit, but mostly he (and his band) just played excellent music.

I commented to a friend about how impressed I was with the concert, and specifically with his incredibly skills doing blues solos, and she said that he was a child prodigy at blues guitar. I hadn't known that, but it would certainly explain the level of ease with which he composed those intricate solo lines. Simply gorgeous. I can't wait until his next album comes out.

That is all. I just wanted to say all that for the benefit of anyone who thinks he's a talentless-pop-nothing. 'Cause he's not. The end. *bows* :D

I was sooooo pissed off when he came to Melbourne, and non of my friends wanted to go and see him play until *after* he was on the Panel, and they were all like; 'Wow, he's great, let's go see him!'

I had to grit my teeth and say, well we can't because it was on Tuesday night, and the Panel was on Wednesday! What, do I have to draw you a picture?

*Sigh* *Grumble*

Next time, baby, give me a few weeks heads-up of when he'll be in Melbourne, and I'll fly back there and see him with you. I'm always looking for another excuse to go back, and I can't WAIT until I see John again in concert, so why not combine the two? And then of course there'd be the bonus of having your charming company too!

I have mixed feelings about the boy, personally. I do love the song "Why Georgia" though; I can totally identify. I mean, I know exactly what the guy's talking about in the song, driving down the roads on hot summer days during work and thinking about the future was pretty much what summer consisted of for me.

I'm actually going to see him perform tomorrow night with Counting Crows. We're all going mainly for the Crows, but I've heard enough of Mayer to know he's quality

Hmm. According to three music major friends and a ex-nightclub singer professor of mine, his Lakeland concert last year sucked. The music was decent, but he acted like a kid on stage (way over the top with foul language, stuff like that). And I still want to know what a 16-year-old was doing singing "Your Body Is A Wonderland." :P

John Mayer rocks, that's awesome you got to see him live. I'm not suprised that he's great live -- he seems like an incredible musician -- but sometimes that's a worry going to see a favorite artist, that they'll suck live.

Oops...yep, 23. Stupid me actually listened to what he said on the Grammy Awards and remembered it. OK, remove my last comment.

That's a hell of a long drive for you Zaia.

(The Nissan Pavillion is about 10 minutes from my dad's house in
Warrenton, VA)

Err, try again, babe. Not 16, and not 23 either (at least not now he's not). He was born a year before me, in 1977, so he's now 26. I know that because a) I'm a fan, and b) there were "John Mayer, est'd. 1977" shirts for sale at the pavilion.

NeoGoomba, I'm a bit sad to say I completely missed the Counting Crows portion of the concert, due to some MAJOR traffic and some unexpected back roads and stuff (we arrived REEEEEALLY late--2 hours--but ended up only missing about thirty minutes of the show because there was some crazy traffic that everyone was apparently stuck in). Anyway, I was mainly going to see John, but I had heard good things about CC, so I was psyched to see them too. Only I didn't really. They didn't play very long, I guess because the concert was so late. By the time my friends and I got to our seats, they were leaving the stage. I didn't even get to see them up there.

Durran Korr, 'Why Georgia' is one of the three faves of mine (3x5 and Comfortable being the other two), and he did a fabulous job with it. He randomly tossed in a couple Timberlake quotes at the end, which (delivered in the way in which they were) almost made me cry I was laughing so hard. It's a great song--I love the line, "Might be a quater-life crisis just a-stirrin' in my soul..." :D Huzzah for being 25ish!!!!

Shep, yeah, it was a bit far, but DAMN was it worth it! And sheesh, if I had known how close I was, I'd have stopped by your dad's with my entourage of women to say hello! Of course, you probably wouldn't have been there, but it's the thought the counts, no? :D

I don't know why, but 83 is quite possibly one of my favourites.
