Sheesh, I just counted...

...thirteen locked threads on the first page of the ST/SW board. None of those I inspected were of the blatant spam or pointless flaming variety.

I swear some of you mods are just bored. When did "Thread Necromancy" become a big offense? As long as they're not filling the old thread with spam or flames, who cares?

Bored is my bet. Think about it, there's nothing wrong with posting in a month old thread if you have something new to say.

Indeed.

Look folks, unless someone is spouting neo-nazi crap or making inane "postcount +1" posts, can you just leave the threads alone? Nobody is hurting anyone, so chill, m'kay?

Prawn, telling the mods what to do is a bad idea. Especially some one like you.

To circumvent it post a new thread about the same thing and put the link to the first one in the first post as a reference.

Ugh, how about: fuck no!

Circumventing a locked thread like that's just asking for trouble. Ask SAMAS on that one. If a thread's locked, it's locked. Restarting it'll do nothing but cause trouble.

If you have a problem with a thread being closed take it up with the mod who closed it or one of the supermods. We'll listen if there's a good reason to unlock it. We're reasonable people after all.

I didn't say locked, did I? He was asking about old threads and what's wrong with providing info if it's new?

Prawn's bitching about locked threads and your post is vague enough it's hard to tell what you meant. And when you talk about circumventing in thread about locked threads it's suspicious.

Ok, sorry about that then.

Prawn, those threads were locked because of a plague of me-too n00bism. At least, I think so. Maybe they should tone it down a bit, eh?

I'm just saying, relax mods. Allow natural selection to cull the herd of threads. If some guy posts to a week old thread but contributes nothing worthy, that thread will likely drop off the radar again very quickly. The board isn't going to clog up and become unusable just because you failed to lay the smack on the second of two concurrent "Mega Maid vs Death Star" threads.

Question, aren't we supposed to post in older topics if we need some new answers? 'Cause I know how you all feel about posts being done before, and new topics matching old topics get immediately deleted/HoS'ed/etc.

A lot of those topics have been done to death, or the person posting just before the lock added nothing new to the discussion. Then, some posts are just STUPID. There's a reason this happens on SW vs ST the most.

Has anyone seen the "Last one to post here wins!" thread over at NationStates? It's nothing but page after page of people posting "I win!" over and over again. The thread has stayed active for an unusually long time, considering the fact that it contains no actual discussion whatsoever.

That's the sort of thread I would be most happy to see locked with extreme prejudice. In my humble opinion the goal of moderation is to keep the board tidy and running smoothly for it's users, by throwing out gratuitous spam, and flames that exceed the local tolerance for obscenity. (That being quite a high threshold here, I admit.) I do not feel the goal of moderation is to impose an arbitrary standard of good taste upon the proceedings.

Half of the versus matchups on the Other Sci-Fi and Fantasy boards could be called "stupid" with a straight face, and it's difficult to think of a ST/SW topic that ISN'T redundant at this point.

*adopts a shitty Jamaican accent*

So all I'm sayin' is, let the t'reads be wot dey will be, mon. Smoke de ganja, let de kiddies debate "Borg vs Three million TIE fighters", ban de guy who posts "OMG UR ALL DORKS!" sixteen times in a row, and it'll be all right, mon.

Your suggestion has been duly noted.

So far no one but you have screamed how bad it's been of thread lockings.

Thank You and have a nice day.

I don't think I screamed it, but I have also brought up this subject before.

But "Last Reply Wins" threads do that quite well, if your forum members have any imagination, because all the spam (the random stuff where the first few replys are "Wow, spam!" followed by +1) ends up in them. It's a thread that exists to be constantly off topic. People can post what they like, and no-one cares. Little discussions or humourous asides rise briefly and then fizzle out. Meanwhile the forum is free of two-post threads that draw no interest at all, and mods don't have to spend their time on the forum locking pointless threads.

That said, databases sometimes collapse under their weight.

Perhaps...but the material he's complaining about is because someone 2-3 weeks later bringing in absolutely nothing to the debate other then me-too or kick when down.

When a thread(especially in SW vs ST) dies down...let it stay dead unless you have something that'll actually contribute to the argument in some way other then "Yeah, take THAT!"

I noticed the thread lockings as well. My opinion is just let it happen until something breaks the rules. No reason to lock threads just because the main question was answered. And if something has been done before, just tell the person to restart it in the old thread (assuming it hasn't been locked).

On the board I moderate at we have a couple of threads going just to satisfy those who want to play. One is called the Post Whore Lounge and is currently about 120 pages long. The other one is called Ignore This, which, of course, nobody ignores and it too is well over 100 pages long. They can be quite fun if you're in a lazy or bored mood and don't want to read or post in a serious topic.

Aha, so other people have noticed.

Speaking of keeping boards clean by leaving spammer-bait, why not let people spaminate the Hall of Shame all they want? All the really awful threads go there anyway.

So if some gimps want to spew gibberish and inflate their post-count by talking about their penis lint, they can do it in a forum where the only readers will be people who've come LOOKING for crap.
